URGENT PLEASE HELP ME ! Need help with FB Messenger changes /security

OK fellas, this is SO FRUSTRATING TO POST. I am trying to move on the 1st, and posted to A Facebook Group for rentals. Mods took almost 24 hours to approve my post, but whatever . I don’t use Messenger much , but frequently download, then delete the APP. 

Anyway, worded my ad more favourably than in past months, and wake up to 5 requests/messages from locals that presumably have a place for me -YAY ! 
So what’s the problem ? 
I have NO ACCESS to what these people messaged me. I assume Messenger underwent some changes, because whether they be friends or strangers….it was never this difficult, someone messaged you, it showed up ASAP. Now it’s like I need to give permission just to CHAT with said person, but even if I do, I can’t see what they messaged me about, AND NOW IT LOOKS I AM IGNORING THEM! WHICH IS BAD FOR ME! 
 

One thing I will add…after 2 years with Mom, and then a month with a low-cost carrier, I cancelled my mobile service 2 weeks ago. I just don’t use my phone for calls anymore, and I have a free WIFI # in case. Could this have anything to do with it ? 
 

Anybody who can help me who is familiar with Messenger and any recent changes , PLEASE HELP ME ! This is the kind of shite that gives me massive anxiety, I mean I have multiple people offering me a better living situation than I have now…..and I cannot even see what they wrote me ?

Looks like I’m not crazy, apparently many people are complaining about changes that were made December 15th

On messenger, if someone sends a message that is not friends with you on Facebook,  the chat goes into message requests. 

To see them you have to click on the menu with chat open, then click on requests.
