Yes, protecting territory. But I think they do it for "sport" too.

If the hawk feels like the need it can dispatch the crow in about 2 seconds.

I have seen it a few times whilst fishing, but usually there are a few crows mobbing the hawk at the same time which tends to piss it off enough to leave the area.

If a hawk feels threatened enough it will spin a 180, stick out it's talons, grab the crow/raven & snap it's neck...

End of story.

Corvid's beaks can be just as lethal. That's why hawks go to great lengths to avoid them.
