I remember growing up as a kid in the 70’s/80’s where cigarette companies sponsored snooker/darts/F1, motorcycle racing etc.

They all got banned.

Now pretty much every football team is sponsored by a gambling company.

Is this really progress or is just switching one addiction to another?.

Opinions?.

I think you are spot on there mate!

My dear old Mum was addicted to Horse Racing and my wife is addicted to Laos Lottery. Only a couple of quid a go and far less expensive than my "weekend wine"... but I can see how those with more money can easily lose it !!

John Terry recently auctioning all his football memorabilia sums it up.

A man with a major gambling addiction.

The guy has always been a bit of a cnut , but still a shame when anyone is affected by addiction..

Paul Merson was another footballer who had a big gambling problem, it's something I'm glad to have never took any interest in. I've only been in a bookies a few times and that was to place my dad's bets when his leg was in plaster!

I have seen 2 cases of Thai wives gambling to nearly bring expat husbands to ruin. One in Thailand and one in Singapore. The Thai case was a huge amount of money and the husband had to do a deal to settle the gambling debt, a divorce settlement and custody of the child with him. Starts out as a bit of fun...

I'm a rubbish gambler , but I only bet on a few of the big sporting events , majors golf , grand national and Cheltenham week .. I have the occasional big win , but it all goes back to the bookies fairly quickly ... but to me its adds a bit of interest when I'm watching the event... I never really got into football betting, but my Grandad did the Littlewoods pools every week , but that was his only vice in life ...😇

My parents loved the pools, never won anything.😀

Used to do that long list in the bookies in the past on a Saturday 8 games for a fiver.

Had a couple of good wins, but usually a draw would let me down.

I also know a guy who lives in Thailand whose wife managed to gamble away a 4 million baht house which he had paid for.

The first thing he knew she was a gambler was when some Thai guys turned up at his house to tell him they're taking his motorbike to cover her debts and asked politely for the keys, which he duly handed over.

He left her, packed his stuff and walked out, and within another 6 months the house was gone.

Not sure if anyone remembers the old "Pattayabargirls" forum, but Dave, the owner of that, had a girlfriend who cleaned him out over gambling debts as well, but to a relatively lesser extent.

Personally I never, ever gamble. My mantra was from my Dad, "you never see a hard up bookie". It really is a mugs game, but the problem is it's more accessible now than it has ever been.

Here in Sweden there's a few football teams with multiple multiple sponsors names on their kits. Shirts, shorts and socks. Their kits look horrendous because of it.

Formula 1 is worse.
