Not even remotely similar to balut, which they also eat in much the same form in Cambodia - I have tried it once there in the past and don't intend to again.

Here's a shot of an egg vendor for stillearly - note the snacks in the front basket topped with a bowl of quail eggs, with the chicken eggs kept warm on the rear basket over charcoal:

I had balut when in Phils. Fucking discusting and I puked up straight after. 🤢

You are not imagining it at all.

I can and do enjoy spicy food and generally I am OK with eating as the Thais do.

I regularly eat a Vindaloo or Phaal curry here in the UK.

I am not a fan of raw chilli taste, so want my spice cooked into the food or very finely chopped if possible.

The one time to prove your statement, I was in a little place in Chiang Mai, the question was asked and my reply was that Pet Mak was good. Now I had ordered a Penang curry and they don't normally come super hot so felt safe.

    WRONG.

When it came I could see from the dark colour that it wasn't normal. One spoonful told me all I needed to know. Wow, was it hot. Then all the kitchen staff came out and stood watching the farrang sweat his socks off. Obviously I had been set up. My Stubborn ass decided it wasn't going to beat me and finished it off, all be it I left a bit of the sauce.

The waiter came and asked if everything was alright, ( fucker ). I smiled and suggested it may of been a bit hot for a Penang, he smiled back and said the cook was amazed because it was too hot for them to eat when he tasted it.

Just to add to my misery, I had a bad guts for 2 days after too!

Similar thing happened to me in Samui a few months back which was the prompt to starting this thread.

Kapow moo, answered yes to the question. The staff kept coming over to check on me as I was eating in a way that never happens, they knew what was up. Blew my fucking head off but I defeated the fuckers 🤯💪

Never answering yes to that question again, happened a handful of times now and I’ve finally learnt from it.

I envy you guys.  15 yrs here and I thought I would slowly progress to the hottst of hot.  as it is still, i can eat curry, but naam prik chilli of any kind gives me instant heartburn.  so opposite of you real me.. I order Mai Pet and live with the looks I get 🙂

I get the worst heart burn ever even without any thing spicy. Get some meds in! Not missing out on good food because of that 🤗

You are absolutely bang on there.

I've eaten some seriously hot and spicy stuff in Thailand and enjoyed it. 2 meals spring to my mind where I'm sure I've been tested by the Thais. First was my mum in laws red curry... Fucking napalm on a plate and I was leaking fluid from my eyes, nose, ears and arse.

Secondly, just last week, a Krapow moo which I ordered pet pet.... Almost finished it but by christ that was hot. Sure I was tested there also.

I’ve never not finished anything, I just pad it out with rice to dissipate the heat. Just sometimes felt like they were taking the piss with something even they wouldn’t eat.

Yep, in fact i get annoyed if it's not spicy enough.

I get the missus to say to them, 'make like for a Thai' when ordering my food. Though that's mostly in the UK, as they make it more mild due to most UK folk not liking or being able to handle it pet mak. So they have to adjust to suit their market.

Though i get what you say, like a challenge to some of them. I love it spicy, like top lip sweating spicy. But sometimes it's been made i think on purpose mega spicy and it's not nice, i can't taste what i'm eating, just mega spice. But that's only happened a couple of times, when even the wife agreed they had made it too hot, probably on purpose, both times in Thailand.

For sure in the Uk, a lot piss weak tasting stuff, that’s standard. Pretty much thinking of when in the motherland. 🤗

I can eat spicier than a Bangkokian but not as spicy as an Isaanian

I’ve eaten plenty with the latter half when they have ordered and never had my head blown off. That said last trip, one dish up in Bua Lam Phu (sort of half way between Khon Kaen and route up to Chiang Khan ish) got the red card from the Thai/issan group for being too spicy and got sent back 🤣🤣🤣, I didn’t even try it because of the pla ra which is a big fk off for me 🤢

  7. I’m sure all of you that have spent a decent amount of time in Thailand have had this question a few times at one point or another.

I can eat fairly spicy food and never really have a problem with the spice level for the most part. Even when eating with Thais when they take care of most of the food ordering for a meal.

The few times I’ve had my head blown off with spiciness is following this question, I’m convinced when you say yes to this question they see it almost as a challenge and think ‘we’ll sort this farang out’ and up it beyond normal levels to prove a point.

What do you reckon? Am I imagining it? 🌶🌶🌶

Thinking I might need to adjust my answer next time I get this question 🤣🤣🤣

Reminds me of a chippy story from where I grew up. The local 25st barber used to allegedly have 15 pints 🍻 of beer on a Saturday then get to the chippy for 10pm, order two portions of fish n chips, one for the journey in the taxi back to his house and the second one to eat at home whilst watching match of the day !

    some man that

Crazy, I normally order a kids fish and chips as I cant eat a normal portion. Whilst it’s our National dish I reckon probably ~75% of them are shit. It’s the chips that are mostly shit, with soggy under cooked/browned chips.

  9. There is a park plaza right on the Asok intersection I’ve stayed at a couple of times that is pretty good (think 4 star business type hotel), think I paid more or less what your budget is. Have got terminal 21 mall and food court opposite and plenty of other eateries in the area. Also you’ve got the sky train and MRT right out side your front door for easy travel to airport although you need to change trains once (Makkasan I think but I forget 🧐)
