  2. I don't think transliteration should be given up on. Chinese pinyin is taught at primary school and secondary school in Singapore for pupils who are familiar with a Latin alphabet, but of course they also need to learn chinese characters.

Vietnamese on the other hand  is written using the Vietnamese alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ). The alphabet is based on the Latin alphabet and was officially adopted many years ago. It seems there is no difficulty to deal with tones in this way.

My thought is that transliteration is a good way to start learning Thai, but if you want to learn to fluency i doubt learning to read and write Thai can be avoided.

I have never attempted to read and write Thai - seems a bit tricky.

    Incredible. For me at least.

I've never played cricket or baseball. But for me i have minor regrets that i never played cricket and do watch, or more likely listen to, the big cricket games.

I have had atrial fibrillation for about 18 years and all too frequently my heart rate has been running in the low 40's and I've occasionally had spells of lightheadedness and dizziness.  This can lead to fainting, which will likely be at the wrong place and wrong time.  So last Monday I had a pacemaker installed.  But not the commonly used type with a battery implanted in the chest and leads going to the heart, but instead it's the newer leadless pacemaker.

This consists of a metal cylinder smaller than a AAA battery.  It's inserted into the femoral vein at the groin and implanted into the right atrium of the heart.  The cylinder has a threaded end and this is screwed into the wall of the heart.  Battery is supposed to last 15 to 25 years.  As I'll be 87 in August battery live is not really a concern for me.  However it can be removed or simply left in place and a second cylinder installed.

Procedure lasted about 2 hours and I had a (miserable, sleepless) overnight stay.  I took the pressure bandage off on Wed morning and could shower.  No driving for a few days to protect the incision.  Otherwise not much drama post-op.

Good move, fainting is not a good idea if it can be avoided. Did you have the operation in thailand or your home country?

Det Udom, hit lucky Boydy wasn't in the Sportsman(yet)

    Good job.

14th Intelligence Detachment, simply known as The Det, was formed during The Troubles, a period of violence in Northern Ireland when bombings, riots, and revenge killings were prominent. The violence resulted in 3,600 deaths and around 30,000 injuries; the period lived up to its name.

I've spent the late evening "mellowing" outside enjoying my life. I'd like to see my final years out here, hopefully another 20 years or more!

But then the irony slowly dawned on me, so I've put it in a riddle that @Butch will understand in seconds..Perhaps about 5 others will too..

    I now live in Ubon

    The Province

    Not the town

    The name is the same

    As the place I left

    Serving for the Crown

    A riddle was post

Butch, is the man, in the know

    Silence.... time passes

I did spend a bit of time on this in the morning and we almost missed math tuition. The Bournmouth suggestion was potentially good except we haven't heard yet either the military or Issan connection.

When you go to a concentration camp, it really brings home the reality of those places.

You can watch TV programmes but it’s not the same as experiencing it for real. Can’t understand how people could just mass murder people because they are different from them.

"When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle."

    Or more simply put:

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
