I am fairly well travelled to around Asia and other places and have no problem returning home with the automated system on a 10 year old passport. I do sometimes think it's related to whether your picture is a true reflection of your actual image taken by the scanner, or the person doesn't look directly into it.

I have a new passport and will be returning in a few weeks. Let's see if it likes me again.

Obviously if there is a red flag on your ID, it will never work.

Maybe there is a red flag but can't think why, my name is not common and I have never been stopped by immigration or been asked any questions. Once by customs, who did take my passport away to check (probably to see if I was on a sex offenders data base having traveled often around Asia) but never been in trouble otherwise.

My photo is a bloody good reflection of an old man of 68 who hasn't changed at all since i was 65 when the picture was taken, never had a rinse in my grey old hair.

Just one of those things although, if I remember rightly, the guy at the desk did say if you put your passport in the scanner slightly wrong or wrong way up first try, before eventually placing it correctly, it may prevent the scanner from letting you through. That was immigration's take on it anyway.

  2. Been watching some of the fan reaction to Chelsea beating Man U last night, I am having a great time. There is another one which is mainly from Africa and it's great but over 24 minutes long. This one will do for me.

my old passport wouldn’t scan at LHR for the past 4 years, renewed earlier this year and still doesn’t scan. I think my name has a marker as a trainee immigration officer asker their trainer if “that was ok?” Pointing at something on the screen against my name. I couldn’t see what it was but I think someone with my name is on the wanted list….it’s not me honest!

My new passport won't let me through the automatic gates, always get sent to a desk for manual check. Got my new passport in July 2021 (it's a blue one).

Maybe if it gets flagged once, it will always be flagged. Maybe too many journeys to Thailand or Philippines. I once got my passport checked by customs who, on seeing I had been to the Philippines about 4 times in the year, must have thought I was a dodgy character. Maybe it's just a legacy of old that needs further checks but it is a bloody pain.

Shocked to see Chelsea auditioning for a magic show and pulling a rabbit out of the hat, I mean two goals in the 110th and 111th minutes to win a game 4 v 3 when being 2 v 3 down after 109 minutes.

Great result but you could see Eric the red was not happy with how his team let the lead slip.

Basically two teams with up and down seasons. Just up for Chelsea today, probably down in next game.

    Premier League is amazing though.

Just realised I should have put the 100th and 101st minute....lol

Supposedly latest goals scored in a Premiership game.

  6. Probably the most frightening experience of my life in July 1990 in the Philippines. I was in the Philippine Airline Office in Manila when the earthquake struck. The whole place felt like it was coming down, the girl serving us leapt across the desk and was out the door.

There was a rush for the door and some just went through the plate glass doors as air cons were flying off the building and nearly hitting us as we made it to the street which was rippling with cars sliding to a halt. The buildings were swaying as if they were going to hit each other. I felt completely useless, just had to wait it out.

Needed a few drinks after that but the aftershocks kept coming, I just headed later for the bars where even going to the toilet (in Superstar) was a chore, trying to aim at a metal basin that was going from side to side with drink inside was quiet a difficult task.

It was really a nasty experience that I wish never to repeat.

I do get asked whether I want to continue to see pics like the one above in my feed, of course I say yes and they keep coming.

The Irish bar is where I had a couple of quiet beers today. None of the 4 bars in the street behind the Irish bar were open today and it looks like only one may still be operating.

If it is Soi Nittapat (Soi Boxing) it should be open at night but, like many things, times change.

A mate has stayed there a couple of times and we would often meet at the Irish Bar as it was about midway between us.  The owner was some kind of weird artist IIRC.

The street behing the Irish Bar had a handful of bars in it - is that Boxing Street or is there another bar area I'm not aware of?

Boxing Street is the main bar area. Also most of the available girls are from Laos and quite friendly. Chat with mama sometimes is a good idea as many don't speak English.

Stayed at Mut Mee a few times. Their car park is so bloody small, 2 cars there already and you park in the street.

Heading to Nong Khai today for 3 nights.

Any recommendations for somewhere to have a few quiet beers in the afternoon?

Soi Boxing (Soi Nittapat) is the street for drinking, a good few bars there. Has a few restaurants, a great Italian and an Aussie place that does good breakfasts.

If you tell a taxi driver, take me to Soi Boxing, they will know where you want to go.

Of course a walk along the Mekong promenade between the market (Tha Sadet) and the  Mut Mee hotel has a few places to have a quiet drink. A few places also on the road just parallel to the promenade are Ok for a quiet drink.

The Mut Mee is a lovey place to sit and drink with a great view over the Mekong and the Friendship bridge.

  11. In a crazy house with 2 Thais eating and drinking while having the Karaoke on volume 11. Despite telling them to keep it down, it stays at a ridiculous level so I thought, I am not driving today, therefore get the wine out.

Drank half a bottle over the last 2 days so drinking what's left. I do have 2 more bottles, if I freak out, but hopefully another poor husband is coming to pick his wife up soon. Lucky bastard has had 2 days of silence and bliss, now he can have his wife back.

Under the Foreign Nationals (Football) Act, passed by the Bundestag, players can only represent the country in which they are resident

With Harry Kane leading the line, Euro 2024 is regarded as England’s best chance of winning an international tournament since their World Cup victory in 1966.

But Germany, the host nation for the Euros, has come up with a dastardly plan to thwart the Three Lions by using an obscure law to prevent Kane from playing for the country of his birth.

Under the Foreign Nationals (Football) Act, passed by the Bundestag in 1898, players can only represent the country in which they are resident.

The law has never been enforced, but it remains on the statute books and with the Euros less than three months away the Deutscher Fussball-Bund, Germany’s equivalent of the Football Association, is in secret talks with the country’s government to put it to use.

    Nightmare scenario

England captain Kane now lives in Bavaria after signing for Bayern Munich last summer, meaning he could face the nightmare scenario of missing out on the tournament or, worse still, being forced to play for Germany.

Olaf Pirlo, secretary of the DFB, said: “Yes, it’s true that there is a law here that means anyone living in Germany has to play for Germany or not at all.

Demand to replay 1966 World Cup final
The Telegraph has learnt that back-channel negotiations have already taken place between the DFB and the FA, but talks broke down when Germany said it would only drop the little-known rule if England admitted the disputed extra-time goal in the 1966 World Cup final never crossed the goal line and agreed to a replay.

Kane, who is England’s all-time top scorer with 62 goals for his country, has caused panic in the German ranks by scoring 31 goals so far in his first season for Bayern Munich.

“Our players just don’t know how to stop him,” admitted Pirlo. “They are coming up against him every week and they now know exactly how good he is. There is a danger he will embarrass the German national side on home soil if he is allowed to play. This would be unacceptable.”

    Export ban
The FA will now face serious questions about why it did not intervene to prevent Kane being sold to Bayern when he left Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

The FA top brass appear to have been unaware of the law that was waiting to be sprung like a trap when Kane arrived in Germany. If it had been more on the ball, it could have asked the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to slap an export ban on Kane in the same way it does for nationally important works of art.

Lawyers for the FA are now scrambling to find a solution. One insider said: “There were always question marks around how Bayern was able to afford the £100 million transfer fee for Kane. We now suspect it might have been paid out of some central government slush fund and that stopping Kane playing for England in the Euros was the real reason for the transfer all along.

It has not been invoked in the past because none of the players who came here were good enough to play for Germany.

But Kane coming to Germany has changed all that. He is the best striker in the world and he simply cannot be allowed to play for England.

  14. Just noticed that if you like a few things on Facebook then your feed gets filled with subjects you like.

I now seem to get anything airline, classic films and wall to wall pics of big breasted women.

Also noted that Ai is generating a hell of a lot of photos of people like Gal Gadot, Salma Hayek and Nicole Scherzinger. The ones of Gal Gadot are lovely but so obviously AI.

Difficult to open the feed now in front of my daughter lol

That is definitely my favourite bar in that area .... but on my last trip into town I discovered that the "railing seats" are not protected from the rain as the awning doesn't extend that far. Bloody annoying really !!

That bar used be run by a girl who was the cashier previously at the Rockhouse. Can't remember her name but she had a very large chest and I think she was running it for the owner when he was away. I remember her when she was working also as a cleaner in the Scandinavian bar right across the back of the 'Best Friend Complex' on Beach road.

Last saw her in a bar in Hua Hin a few years back but she was a friendly girl.

It does seem a nice bar with comfortable chairs. Not a lover of billabong myself.

Yes, I was rather shocked, but took an advance visit to Hua Hin immigration and posed that question. Was told no problem on a 30 day exempt visa. Being free was also a bonus.

I had previously been told by an agent on Soi 94 that I needed a Non O visa and to have residence in Hua Hin. Immigration even advised me that staying in hotel for 9 days was also acceptable.

    I was a happy boy.

Yes but 5 years from next week when my birthday is. That's why it was important everything went smoothly as the 12 month expiry was up next week.

Yes, I did benefit from getting my licence in September 2023, it ran out in July 2023 (my birthday). I thought they were going to just give me 5 years from that July, but they gave me new licences valid from September 2023 plus 5 years from this July (2024), so runs out in July 2029. Almost 6 years validity.

Not bad for a non resident on a 30 day exempt visa and with residence at Initial Condo Hotel, staying only 9 nights in the country.
