France will stop lorry movements from the UK for 48 hours in the wake of fresh concerns over the spread of a new strain of coronavirus in the UK.

The move means outbound traffic from Dover will stop.

Ministers and officials will discuss the move at the government's COBRA emergency committee on Monday.

Freight from France to the UK will be allowed, but there are fears lorry drivers will not travel to avoid being stuck in the UK.

The Port of Dover is closed to traffic leaving the UK "until further notice" due to border restrictions in France, port authorities said in a statement.

"Both accompanied freight and passenger customers are asked not to travel to the port," it said. "We understand that the restrictions will be in place for 48 hours from midnight."

    Flight bans

"Tonight's suspension of accompanied freight traffic from the UK to France has the potential to cause serious disruption to UK Christmas fresh food supplies - and exports of UK food and drink," Food and Drink Federation (FDF) chief executive Ian Wright warned.

"Continental truckers will not want to travel here if they have a real fear of getting marooned.

"The Government must very urgently persuade the French government to exempt accompanied freight from its ban."

French transport minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbarisaid France was suspendingall traffic from the UK from midnight for at least 48 hours.

A number of countries have banned or are considering stopping flights from the UK following the emergence of a new variant of coronavirus.

Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium are all halting flights, and other nations are considering the move.

Trains to Belgium are also stopping.

Eurotunnel is suspending access to its Folkestone terminal from 22:00 GMT for traffic and freight heading to Calais in France.

Sad state of affairs, even if "la perfide Albion" is a bit our historical opponent, you sure don't deserve this.

The press and UK government should maybe have stayed a bit more low profile about this new version of C19 and not dramatazing it as they did, which left little choice to other governments but to react in order to "protect their population"

Again all a bit overdone in panic IMO.

What's next ? A Naval blocade ? Well, at least that would be Brexit sorted !

  2. Deeply anti Myanmar biaised article (idem for the 2 previous ones btw) in BKK Post.

    https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/2038439/samut-sakhon-covid-cases-to-keep-rising

Same shit happened in SGP, where construction workers are kept / lodged in slavery like conditions.

Not surprising a virus will spread like a wildfire in that kind of environment.

Now, as @Escomentionned the vast majority of workers are Myanmar, but what about the customers / buyers in that market ? They are obviously Thai, no ?

And very likely coming from different cities and provinces. So we can reasonnably expect some.of those buyers having been infected and brought the thing back to their shops and home towns ?

But, anyway let's put some barbered wire around the workers camp, and as mentionned by another genius minister "Situation 'back to normal' within 4 weeks"

Again, wait till Thailand start to do some serious mass testing and you'll see the problem....

Disregard whatever you want, doesn't mean its not true. The Thai healthcare system is far superior to that of most nations, including France or Ireland. Thailand is more than capable of handling a tiny rise in covid19 cases. It certainly does not need a hysterical overreaction, although I fear that's what is going to happen.

    Sure mate, sure....

Look the list posted by Esco....Thailand beats France obviously. If you read upside down, as you obviously do.

    Idiot !

I've been to both the best private hospitals in Bangkok and to small country clinics...

    All good.

Remove private hospitals and clinics which most ordinary people can not afford.

Consider only the (free) public hospitals, things will sure look very different, specially in rural areas.

  5. OK, a few stats for those who are able to read and interpret them.

     FRANCE :

    Total deaths since 01/03/20

    Deces chart 201207.jpg

Data behind the chart, date 07/12/20

                                                                  2020            2019         2018

    Deces data 201207.jpg

    Variation 2020 vs 2019 : + 25.898 (+ 16%)

    Variation 2020 vs 2018 :  + 29.186  (+ 18,5%)

Those variations are definitively significative, no doubt.

Evolution of deaths by age 2020 vs 2019.  Self explanatory. Risk is not significative up to 49y,  very limited from 50 to 64, clearly much higher risk after that

    Evol age deces 201207.jpg

    U.K : (Data ONS)

Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk)

    ONS 201204.jpg

Look at non Covid vs Covid death.....

Looking up the raw data behind is a bit a pain, can't be bothered to do it.

No. Thailand was recently ranked as one of the best health systems in the world. It has incredible private hospitals for those that can afford health insurance, and a good level of provision for those reliant on state aid. Compare that to France, which is reliant on sub saharan Africans with fake degrees and appalling hygiene, or the UK with 5 year waiting lists and diversity co-ordinators on 50k a year. There is no contest, Thai health system is far superior and well equipped to cope.

What a load of ridiculous bollock.....

OK, considering what time it is in UK, I will disregard this post ....

I really hope they see sense, there is no need to panic, majority of new cases were asymptomatic. Thailand has one of the best healthcare systems in the world, it can cope with a small increase in cases. Many hospitality businesses will not be able to cope with being shuttered over what should be the busiest time of year.

    😩

Are you joking ?  Except for the rich !

I also think history will now make Trump by far the worst ever President after Warren Harding. Yes he got 70 million votes

    That's exactly the problem ......

But, ok, lets not turn this in an another US politic thread !

    Back to topic.

May as well abolish Christmas altogether. Its going to be bleak and I suspect that many will ignore Tier 4 if they have already made plans and spent money organising Xmas.

A few months ago I posted what I found hilarious, a Belgian minister proposing.to postpone Christmas till summer 2021. Sort of Belgian joke.

    Now guess what ?

    https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/christmas-covid-postpone-easter-robert-jenrick-b334409.html?amp

Government minister today told families to consider postponing festive get-togethers, saying: "Easter can be the new Christmas.

Postpone Christmas until June summer solstice, says Dr Scally

FFS, the whole world is walking on it's head. Stupidity has become the new standard ......

Again, moving here was my best idea in the last 10 years ! All Europe has gone crazy.

Why would i need to do that?

I was posting on the said thread, the original Trump thread when they starting crying to Admin, stuff like a Mod was not allowed a opinion, i even ridiculed them for doing so, saying it was all fun and games when they were dishing it out, but not so when a few gave it back.

Indeed Admin came on to the thread and gave his opinion.

A mod should keep a certain distance / neutrality and sure NOT get deeply involved in the political section....

Basic 101. Same as a cop or a judge can have a political opinion but he leaves it at home when he put on his uniform !

    Only for Americans....

Logic, as they are a deeply, bitterly divided biparty society, and have been taughed since long that Rep must hate Dem and vice versa. Hence ANY difference of point of view on ANY subject will be brought back to that and degenerate.

Even good old Mangobollocks had that virus !

Sad state of affairs, pretty well explained in a few documentaries.

Search Youtube "America, a deeply divided society"

It has gone as bad as religious extremisme....

Kin ell, I wasn't expecting this.

Caveat: Wasn't so long ago a drug bust of "tons" of ketamine was announced, then reduced to less than a couple of grams.....

Well, well, well....as I said, with a bit more testing they will discover more cases ....

Of course, as usual blame a good part of the responsabilities on :

"A majority of the new cases are migrant workers, according to Opas."

Anyway, Thai government numbers....to be taken with a large pinch of salt...
