Well I remember when a message topic such as this would have prompted different questions from myself other than the ones I am about to ask. Getting older is a bitch, but also a blessing at times. Who knows. Anyway ->

In early May the Mrs and myself are making a few days trip up to Bangkok from the overall Bang Lamung area. The purpose of the trip is for her to have an interview at the US Embassy to obtain a visa so that she can accompany me on a trip to the US in September. On paper she is a lock, but visas at the US Embassy are a mystery box. That topic belongs in a different thread than this one.

What I am asking about is that come hell or high water what are some suggestions for some side trips and restaurants. It has been decades since I spent much time in Bangkok.

    • We are staying at the Chatrium Riverside, which is on the Chao Phraya near the Spahan Taksin Sky Train stop. The hotel has river boat ferries that will take one to various locations and connections. I have stayed there several time before and it is a very good moderately priced hotel with a good buffet breakfast option. I opted for a suite with a river view (not all that much more expensive) to set a positive mood for the Mrs and her interview.

    • The Mrs has never seen Wat Po or the Royal Palace. These are relatively close together and I figure this will be a good day trip.
    • I have never been to Asiatique, which is not that far from the hotel. I am thinking we can go there one night to sample the food stalls. Anyone been there?
    • I  am also looking for some restaurant suggestions in the general area. Isan Thai food suggestions would be most appreciated, but some decent Farang places would be good as well. I checked for the places that I liked a decade of so back and most have gone out of business, or Google is blocking them from searches. I am really becoming suspicious of Google.

If you have a BTS station at your doorstep, the city is your oyster.

Terminal 21 is also i central thing to check (if you have wifey with you), can take the BTS 0r MRT there. Pedestrian connectins, etc. Great food court.

Then down to Asoks and a short cross over and walk down to ....

I do 45 minutes at 6mph on the treadmill every day, keeps my weight down as I am not doing anything else currently, and keeps my fitness up.

No interest in weight training anymore, don’t want to aggravate my right shoulder as it can give me pain.

I just alleviated pain in both shoulders.... completely. If you ease into it with light shoulder exercises you will be able to eliminate the shoulder pain. Guarenteed !   It's liberating mate.

Or.... you can continue to be a true mashcocist.

Last job I had was taken out of desperation as I'd been out of work for over a year.  Worked nights, 21:00-07:00 seven days and then 7 days off.  As mentioned at the very least the first day off is just a recovery day and as I was in my sixties it frequently took more that one day to recover.  I remember my daughter saying how much better I looked after I quit.  Did that for 7 years until I hit 65 and social security pension kicked in.  Then I moved to Thailand.

That was in a hospital lab in a rural setting and maybe the most gratifying job I'd had as I got a lot more patient contact than I'd ever had in other similar jobs.  But yes, after 7 years I was definitely all done.

Getting out early is worth millions in my mind (both in dollars and seconds of time).

Most homes have one. It's called an air conditioner. Just set the temp high on the A/C, I keep mine at 29-30, and it'll do an effective job of removing humidity from the room.

Yep... that was part of my thinking. Why bother with one if I have the AC cranking 24/7.

Just been chatting to a mate in Pattaya who mentioned the US Navy had been in town.

Reminds me of one of my first visits in the late 80s/early 90s when there was a shit load of them on shore leave. I remember being at the old Carousel bar in Soi Diamond, there was a group of black guys, completely oblivious to the girls, dancing around one of the old ghetto blaster thingys and TBH I thought they were as cool as f**k. Now at that time in my life I had absolutely no interest in bar fines etc. the idea of paying for sex was simply a non starter (my how times have changed 😁). However, the 2 mates I was with had been 6 months in Oman and all they wanted was to get pissed and laid. After the required number of beers I overcame my English shyness and started talking to the yanks, as luck would have it I was (still am) a massive fan of Mowtown, Stax and Atlantic music so we had some common ground, not much but enough. It was the highlight of my holiday. Pretty fly for a white guy 🙄.

Fast forward to around 12 years ago and there was a Cobra exercise at Wing 23 in Udon. The town just exploded into life with girls and women being brought in from the surrounding villages, the atmoshere was electric, in fact I have never since seen the bars so packed. The guys knew how to enjoy themselves and were'nt afraid to splash the cash, much to the distain of the grumpy old sexpats. Can still picture it now a young guy obviously hammered, laughing his head off, shirtless riding an elephant through Nutty Park at 2 in the morning.

So my experiences are very positive when the servicemen get "liberty" in Thailand. Anyone care to share theirs?

I used to be the only white guy in all black joints on the South Side of Chi-town when I was young. Never had a problem and some of the best fun times of my life.

It didn't hurt for the fact that my 3 black pals and I were all packing...lol

Wifey tells me the local news here in Minburi, is reporting that the " experts" meaning the guys who watch the power grid here locally, are concerned that there might be an "overload" soon.

Great, just what we need, for the power to go out!

This is what I have been fearing.

Fortunately a few months ago they did some serious upgrades to some of the main lines into my area.

I have also read recently that the power related resources are in good shape, so don't need to worry about that.

I think the big concern is a bad storm to come through which causes havoc and then major brownouts, followed by more high temps.

The black, smelly water that was flowing out of a pipe in Na Jomtien a month ago has now made an appearance farther north in Jomtien.

I wondered at the time when it was reported they blocked and covered up the pipe in Na Jomtien if that was all they did. And if all they did was block the pipe as a quick and dirty fix, then that black, smelly water would be making an appearance elsewhere. And guess what...

I'm sure those drain pipes throughout the entire area are clogged to the max. Water gets down there and just festers turning black as coal.

When the water finally finds an escape route the smell must be noxious.

I am a big fan of very strong cheddar cheese and eat it all of the time.

Decent cheese is available in Thailand, but it is expensive.
