Krung Thep was the conventional abbreviation, but as pointed out above the "new" name was kept on the numberplates and several other official place.

Please strive for a little consistency. The word herb has an H at the beginning in English it is pronounced as part of the word, the French for their own reasons drop it in their pronunciation, in the US they use the French pronunciation.
So it looks like the inverted commas around the word gangster in the thread title should be moved from gangster to Canadian. It appears the victim was definitely a gangster but it is doubtful if he was in fact a Canadian.
