Car Hire - Excess Waiver Insurance

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Today I booked a hire car for 4 days, used Europacar from Heathrow for a trip to the south west in 2 weeks time. Now I get discounts (ex airline) so for a small Vauxhall Astra (or similar) I only paid £48.62.

They were quoting silly prices for child seats (have one) and satnav (have one) which I could decline but of course the kick in the pants is the fact that unless you take out their premium insurance you will be left with an excess of £1100 if the car is damaged or the car is stolen etc. Well I was thinking about leaving it or taking it, a gamble which they hope will see you pay the premium.

Anyhow opened my Daily Mail online today to find out that RAC have said that the premium charged to customers to cover excesses etc is way too high and that they will cover your hire for less, they even offer an annual rate.  Now I didn't know that there are other companies that offer this service as it will cover for the car companies excess especially as this is not mandatory with the cover you purchase from the car company..

I got a quote for £22 for the 4 day hire or £43 for an annual policy, I opted for the annual policy which covers not just the UK but Europe as well.

I was well chuffed as I have saved over £60 on the 4 day trip alone.

For info the link I saw is attached (I have used a non Daily Mail link but same info), it mentions not just RAC but other companies that offer this excess insurance. I now have peace of mind for much less than Europacar were willing to offer me.

Haven't hired a car for years but always used to take out one of these 3rd party insurance policies.  Some of the hire companies make a stink about it, but it's their own fault for trying it on IMO.

That's a great deal as well.  Never had thought about a separate insurance before, had always just paid the premium direct to the car hire company.
