You have my utmost sympathy, i too was a regular sciatica sufferer until i had an operation at Bangkok Hospital Korat in 2015 that went some way to mitigate the pain, its easily manageable now. Prior to the op i was prescribed morphine by BHK which did nothing to alleviate the pain, it just made me very dizzy. One thing i did find that helped was weed.....

Regarding the renewing of your DL that would not surprise me TIT, Korat DL Center would not accept my Yellow book as proof of residency and made me go to Korat Immigration to get a COR when renewing DL WTF !!! He has his own gear that he uses on my gaff, petrol strimmer for the grass and petrol hedge strimmer/hand shears for the rest. Talk about a lawn mower, i've never seen a Thai gardener use one, they all seem to use strimmers/hand shears. I have the use of a Thai gardener that sorts my gaff out. He only speaks Thai and i don't so my wifey deals with him. He does a reasonable job but not really up to English standards but what he does is ok.
