I think it is a result of the situation you were raised in
My mum hated to waste any thing ( my parents were comfortable) my granddad was from Scotland was a coal miner on the west coast of nz during the depression ( huge amounts of unemployment)
My dad's father was a banker not rich but there was always food on the table and he regarded any thing that hadn't been used in 6 months should be looked at and considered waste
When they were in their 80s mum was getting real bad at hanging on to stuff like stock from a shop mum had owned 20 years earlier and dad would ring me up ( I had rubbish trucks) " your mum is out this afternoon are you going past with a truck " I would have one of the boys ring him when he was 10 minutes away and dad would start stacking stuff by the garage plus a box of beer even after he had been told repeatedly no need for the beer and the driver was a fit young feller and would carry all the stuff
