  1. Probably a silly question, but here it is - With all the Thai Public Holidays who pays ? ie Do Thai workers get paid for the holidays ? or do they just work as usual in order to pay the rent, food etc etc? Is there a wide variation - some get paid ...others not ?? I'm sure there is no magic pudding.....
  2. The above can look even worse when shown as a percentage of the product - eg some sauces (tomato ketchup etc can be more then 40% of the contents - BBQ sauce even more.
  3. This is interesting - particularly if driving after a big night - How Long Does Alcohol Stay in Your System? People may say they can sober up quickly, but their physiology tells a different story. Alcohol is one of the most predictable chemical reactions in the human body, and virtually everyone breaks alcohol down at almost precisely the same rate. Alcohol metabolism: breaking it down Alcohol is metabolized (broken down) by the body at a rate of 0.016% per hour.1 It doesn’t matter if you are 6’4” or 4’6” or if you drank red wine or moonshine. Once your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) reaches a certain level-no matter how it got to that level-your body needs time to break the alcohol down and remove it from your system. How long does it take to metabolize alcohol? On the bright side, this precise metabolism makes it fairly easy to determine how long it will take for you BAC to reach zero. Take a BAC of 0.16, for example, a BAC that is twice the legal limit (BAC 0.08) in some countries. Since your body (and every body) metabolizes alcohol at 0.016% per hour, it will take 10 hours for a person with a BAC or 0.016 to reach a BAC of 0.00. In fact, you can determine BAC for each hour that you spend metabolizing alcohol. Let’s continue using the same example. Assume a person has a BAC of 0.16 at two in the morning. She stopped drinking and is simply sobering up (letting her enzymes break down alcohol). Even without measuring each hour, you already know her BAC for the next 10 hours. https://www.drinkfox.com/information/alcohol-metabolism Calculate if you are still over the limit next morning - https://www.drinkfox.com/tools/bac-calculator
  4. The old question about fishing goes - Where is the best place to go fishing ? The best answer being - "where the fish are". So if your seeking afternoon, night "delight" - then you just cannot go passed the Six. Where else will one find 500- 800 women engaging in the world's oldest profession ? If you cannot quite find the type you fancy - just keep looking. The bars on the Six are not perfect of course, but who cares 😋 The original Sportsman Restaurant was in Soi 6 (in mid 1990's) and you could also get ST either before or after breakfast on the Soi as well - but not at Sportsman. I prefer a series of quiet BB's for drinking, mixing it up and having a wander around etc. Occasional GC's but avoid ones out of the way, notwithstanding Bolt etc.
  5. What was Charlie Munger's famous quote? 'Live within your income and save so that you can invest. Learn what you need to learn.' .. Why is Charlie Munger not as rich as Warren Buffett? Charlie Munger was a fraction as wealthy as Warren Buffett ... Mostly because Buffett has always owned a much larger Berkshire stake, but also because Munger has sold or donated more than 75% of his Berkshire stock over the years. Buffett's business partner owned 18,829 A shares — 1.6% of the outstanding stock — in 1996, the earliest year for which disclosures are available. .. What does Warren Buffett say about Charlie Munger? “Charlie has given me the ultimate gift that a person can give to somebody else,” Buffett said. “I've lived a better life because of Charlie.” .. What is Charlie Munger known for? Munger pioneered the concept of mental models, which are conceptual structures that help us understand how the world works. They are bits of knowledge or wisdom we file away in our heads to help us make decisions. ..
  6. RIP Charlie Munger NEW YORK, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Charles Munger, who died on Tuesday, went from working for Warren Buffett's grandfather for 20 cents an hour during the Great Depression to spending more than four decades as Buffett's second-in-command and foil atop Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Munger's family had advised that he died peacefully on Tuesday morning at a California hospital, said Berkshire. The union of Munger with Buffett is among the most successful in the history of business; they transformed Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire into a multi-billion dollar conglomerate with dozens of business units. Yet the partnership that formally began when they teamed up in 1975 at Berkshire, where Buffett was chairman and Munger became vice chairman in 1978, thrived despite pronounced differences in style, and even investing. Known almost universally as Charlie, Munger displayed a blunter form of musings, often in laconic one-liners, on investing, the economy, and the foibles of human nature. He likened bankers to uncontrollable "heroin addicts," called the virtual currency Bitcoin "rat poison," and told CNBC that "gold is a great thing to sew into your garments if you're a Jewish family in Vienna in 1939 but I think civilized people don't buy gold. They invest in productive businesses." Munger was no less pithy in talking about Berkshire, which made both he and Buffett billionaires and many early shareholders rich as well. "I think part of the popularity of Berkshire Hathaway is that we look like people who have found a trick," Munger said in 2010. "It's not brilliance. It's just avoiding stupidity." https://www.reuters.com/business/obituary-charlie-munger-oracle-pasadena-who-was-buffetts-second-in-command-2023-11-28/
  7. It's sort of like a "Gold Rush" mentality that keeps repeating - - Massage shops - Weed Shops - The serious cash thrown in various venues post Covid that failed to take off. The site of the old Oasis gogo a good example. - New and fairly large new/ replacement BB complexes - which then drive customers away with very loud music - eg the back lot of tree town. I still just look for and support those places which get the fundamentals correct, ie - A good line up, icy cold beer at reasonable prices & not too loud music. But what would I know....
  8. According to a statement from the Carter Center, former first lady Rosalynn Carter passed away late Sunday afternoon, she was 96. Australia win their sixth World Cup Australia have capped a remarkable resurgence in the World Cup to lift their sixth trophy. Chasing 241 for victory against host-nation India, Australia achieved victory for the loss of only six wickets. On a day Australian great Ricky Ponting said Pat Cummins came of age as a captain, Cummins won the toss and boldly decided to bowl first at Narendra Modi Stadium, citing the potential for night dew as one reason for the call. Credit AP Cummins rotated his bowlers superbly, India unable to build momentum, as the white ball began to reverse swing. In reply, the Australians slipped to 3-47 in seven overs, but a stunning century from Travis Head (137 off 120, 15 boundaries, four sixes) and a defiant 58 from Marnus Labuschagne gave Australia another world title. Head finally fell with only two runs needed for victory, caught in the deep. Defeats early in the tournament had left many doubting whether the Australians would even make the finals, but Head’s half-century in the tight semi-final win over South Africa, and his heroics on this day, will live long in the memory. https://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/cricket-world-cup-final-live-updates-australia-take-on-india-in-decider-20231118-p5el0o.html

  11. Words can be so inadequate in these circumstances. For most of us the only thing that works is time and distance after sad and tragic events. Its easier said then done, but after grieving and remembering we have to get on with it. Krapow's comment below makes the point excellently, IMO.
  12. 16. Yep - I've seen it said that those who made the most & most 'reliable' money during gold rush days were those who sold the picks, shovels, food, tents booze etc to the hopeful miners. Not all that much has changed...but add bar fit outs in general etc.

  20. The Secret Life of John le Carre by Adam Sisman Overview: The extraordinary secret life of a great novelist, which his biographer could not publish while le Carré was alive. Secrecy came naturally to John le Carré, and there were some secrets that he fought fiercely to keep. Adam Sisman's definitive biography, published in 2015, provided a revealing portrait of this fascinating man; yet some aspects of his subject remained hidden. Nowhere was this more so than in his private life. Apparently content in his marriage, the novelist conducted a string of love affairs over five decades. To these relationships he brought much of the tradecraft that he had learned as a spy—cover stories, cut-outs and dead letter boxes. These clandestine operations brought an element of danger to his life, but they also meant deceiving those closest to him. Small wonder that betrayal became a running theme in his work. In trying to manage his biography, the novelist engaged in a succession of skirmishes with his biographer. While he could control what Sisman wrote about him in his lifetime, he accepted that the truth would eventually become known. Following his death in 2020, what had been withheld can now be revealed. The Secret Life of John le Carré reveals a hitherto-hidden perspective on the life and work of the spy-turned-author and a fascinating meditation on the complex relationship between biographer and subject. “Now that he is dead,” Sisman writes, “we can know him better.”
