  6. ‘Crass’ and an ‘insult’. FIFA president criticized for speech on Qatar’s human rights ahead of World Cup FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s near hour-long speech on the eve of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has been described as “crass” and an “insult” to migrant workers by human rights groups. In an explosive monologue at the start of a news conference in Doha, Infantino – the boss of world soccer’s governing body – accused Western critics of Qatar’s human rights record of hypocrisy. FIFA President Gianni Infantino attends a press conference at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC) in Doha on November 19, 2022, ahead of the Qatar 2022 World Cup football tournament. - Infantino hit back at Western critics of Qatar's human rights record at his opening press conference of the World Cup on November 19, blasting their "hypocrisy". “What we Europeans have been doing for the last 3,000 years, we should be apologizing for the next 3,000 years before starting to give moral lessons,” he said. “Reform and change takes time. It took hundreds of years in our countries in Europe. It takes time everywhere, the only way to get results is by engaging … not by shouting.” The tournament, which starts on Sunday, is the first World Cup to be held in the Middle East, but it has been mired in controversy, with much of the build-up focusing on human rights, from the death of migrant workers and the conditions many have endured in Qatar, to LGBTQ and women’s rights. Infantino, despite admitting things weren’t perfect, said some criticism was “profoundly unjust” and accused the West of double standards. ...

  8. I've noticed on several occasions I'll start out on my morning bike ride from central Pattaya and when I get near the crest of Khao Noi or Khao Talo I'll end up riding through rain. Very localized. Probably because the prevailing winds hit the higher elevation and dump their moisture before passing on to the other side.
  9. Just tried Skyscanner and was surprised to see lower cost flights show up that didn't show on the Google search. Looks like I'll be switching search sites.

  14. ^^^ On this morning's ride saw one selfish Thai on a motorbike pulled up to the curb at the narrowest point to check his phone for something. Result was that choke point was clogged by vehicles and motorbikes trying to squeeze by where under different circumstances those of use on two wheels could have used that space to get by.

  19. It's about time the Chinese citizens pushed back against the zero Covid nonsense. Residents ‘revolt’ over oppressive Covid lockdowns in China’s Guangzhou Residents under Covid lockdown in China’s southern manufacturing hub of Guangzhou have torn down barriers meant to confine them to their homes, taking to the streets in defiance of strictly enforced local orders, according to video and images circulating on social media. Some of the images show large crowds cheering and surging across toppled barriers and filling streets after dark in the city’s Haizhu district, which has been under an increasingly restrictive lockdown since November 5, as the epicenter of the city’s ongoing Covid outbreak. The clanging sound of metal barriers falling reverberates across the neighborhood and mingles with cheers in the footage, in scenes multiple social media users said took place late Monday evening on district streets. In one video, Covid workers in protective medical wear can be seen standing on the sidelines as barriers fall, while trying to speak with people on the streets. “They’re revolting,” a woman’s voice is heard saying in the background of one of the videos. CNN has geolocated the images to Haizhu district, but could not independently confirm them. ...
