maipenrai
Imagine you're sleeping peacefully in your home in a quiet neighbourhood at 0530 one morning and suddenly all hell breaks loose: https://www.ckrw.com/news/local-news/early-morning-explosion-destroys-home-in-riverdale/ The owner of the home is a retired local lawyer, and rumour has it that he had had a propane (LNG) fireplace installed by a friend a couple of days before. He survived, although in critical condition, but his next door neighbour wasn't quite as lucky: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/whitehorse-house-explosion-victim-gould-1.7029826 It turns out that this fellow was a friend of mine when I lived in Dawson City myself in the '80s, although I hadn't seen him for many years and didn't even know he was living in Whitehorse; I also knew his wife quite well as she was the manager of one of the bigger tourist hotels in the summertime - he really was a nice guy and may he RIP.

We used to have gas leaks on campus about once a month on campus. You could smell that shit for blocks. Sucked up a lot of resources as we would have to block off interesections and evacuate the buildings. Used to piss me off like crazy.

The additive to natural gas is called mercaptan and you can smell it in concentrations as small as 10 parts per billion. More fun facts about mercaptan... It is a colorless gas with a distinctive putrid smell. It is a natural substance found in the blood, brain and feces of animals (including humans), as well as in plant tissues. It also occurs naturally in certain foods, such as some nuts and cheese. It is one of the chemical compounds responsible for bad breath and the smell of flatus. Methanethiol is the simplest thiol and is sometimes abbreviated as MeSH. It is very flammable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanethiol
