  1. Plenty of bear sightings around my town lately too - there are two black bear sows, each with three cubs, that have been making the rounds and then this happened last week too not far from here: North Grizzly killed in Marsh Lake after breaking into cabin with people inside The bear was emaciated, according to a conservation officer Steve Silva · CBC News · Posted: Aug 20, 2020 8:11 AM CT | Last Updated: August 20 One of the trailers broken into this month by a grizzly bear in Marsh Lake, Yukon. (Karen Vallevand/CBC) 10 comments A grizzly bear was killed over the weekend after breaking into a cabin with people inside in Marsh Lake, Yukon, according to the territorial government. "This bear clearly knew that it was not in any condition to make it through the winter, so it was getting rather extreme in the lengths that it would go to to try and find food sources," David Bakica, a conservation officer for the Whitehorse district, said on Wednesday. The problems with the bear date as far back as at least Aug. 11, when conservation officers were called to the area of McClintock Valley Road. Bakica said the bear broke into a residence with someone inside. The person escaped through a back door, then went inside a travel trailer. Yukon advocates want moratorium on grizzly bear hunting, gov't says population appears 'stable' When police arrived, the sound of their cars arriving scared the bear away, he said. Later, conservation officers set up a trap, among other things, and they learned that the bear broke into several cabins, homes, and trailers. "It broke through closed doors, broke the locks off just by smashing on the door," Bakica said. The bear also ripped doors off of campers and broke through a window, he added. Late Saturday, it broke into a cabin with two people inside, where it was shot by one of the occupants. The people weren't injured, Bakica said. "This is a pretty unusual circumstance. Bears generally have a natural fear of humans, to the point where they won't go where there are strong human smells," Bakica said. "This bear probably didn't realize there were people in the cabins, but this bear just simply didn't care." Yukon researcher looking for help collecting bear poop He said the bear was emaciated and more than 30 years old. Bakica said it's important that people think about how to properly manage things on their property that attract bears, such as food.
  2. Tiny road racing bike flying along in the wet - probably only 50 or 100cc judging from tire size..
  3. Well, that's depressing to hear but it confirms what I've been kind of expecting would happen - guess I'll have to look at somewhere else this winter if I am able to travel anywhere....
  4. I've had the occasional draft in go-go's but generally prefer bottled beer or Sangsom - the only places I drink draft regularly are the sports/British type bars where I'll drink Heineken or Tiger, and it certainly tastes better than the stuff I've been given in the go-go's. The only time I've ever been forced to leave a bar in Pattaya was over a draft beer - I was in the old Rolling Stone bar on the corner of Walking St and Soi 16 and I was brought a glass of draft that was flat - I politely told the server this and asked for another glass. She couldn't seem to understand what I meant and got the security guys involved; I tried to explain to them that all I wanted was a fresh glass but they seemed to have the idea that I didn't want to pay for it and they insisted that I pay RIGHT NOW - unfortunately all I had was a 1000b bill which probably made it look even worse to them and after my change was brought over I was bodily escorted from the bar, never to return...
  5. Yet another grey, damp morning in my neck of the Canadian woods...one of the worst summers I've ever seen here.
  6. I love a straight six in anything, and BMW's versions are about as good as they come. Although I'd love to take your F80 for a good boot, I don't think I'd want to buy a BMW newer than my 2003 330xi E46 because they are just too full of electronic gimmickry and I am thousands of miles away from the nearest dealer and need to do most of my own maintenance and repairs (thankfully few of these so far!).
  7. I wish we could see a little heat over here - another dismal weekend done and rainy days forecast for the next week - I've almost written summer off at this point, the leaves will start to turn in another week or so anyway. The best we can hope for now is a couple of weeks of "Indian Summer" in September - oops, maybe I should call it "Aboriginal Autumn" in this PC day and age, lol...
  8. I had three diesel full-sized pickups here in northern Canada in the '90s - two Fords and a Chev and they weren't a bad alternative at the time; these had mechanical injection systems, were reasonable to maintain and diesel tended to be somewhat cheaper at the pumps. Now they are all electronically controlled and repair costs can be hideous if you don't buy new-with-warranty - no way would I touch one of these things with lots of miles on them, and some were just plain lemons, like the Ford 6 liter motors of a few years ago. The only way I would buy a full-sized diesel again is if I had a job for it. Now if I could buy one of those smaller Asian trucks with the turbo'd, intercooled, etc. motors I may spring for one of those but they won't sell them in North America because of emission standards and the climatic conditions here. Diesel cars I have never been interested in, but my cousin in England had a diesel Audi Q7 a few years ago that was an amazing performer - but as soon as the warranty ran out, he traded it off...nowadays he's driving a Tesla and just put a deposit on one of those incredibly ugly new Tesla pickups...
  9. Butt-ugly (literally) like most other modern offerings...what ever happened to the crisp, clean designs of around twenty years ago?
  10. I'd love to visit Amsterdam some day - the Dutch and Canadians also share an affinity, mostly due to the events of World War II; my own father spent a lot of time in the Netherlands during the winter of 1944/45.
  11. I had a haircut in Phnom Penh last year at one of the little outdoor stalls on the street - the wall was covered in photos like the ones above, these goofy (IMHO) shaved-on-the-side, long-on-top jobs and I told the guy that if he made me look like those photos, I'd kill him - he had a good chuckle about that and gave me a decent cut.
  12. I flew EVA for 13 years in premium economy, YVR-TPE-BKK and would have continued to do so save for the fact that they decided to start flying 787's on this route as of last February and that meant dropping the premium economy class; so I booked on Cathay Pacific instead in premium economy, YVR-HKG-BKK and only got to experience the outgoing leg of this flight as HKG cancelled all transit passengers as of March 24 so I had to re-book on Korean Air Lines to get home in early April. For the record, EVA premium economy was much better than Cathay Pacific, IMHO...
  13. Probably not surprising when you consider that he was basically a child prodigy who dropped out of school as an adolescent with his parents' consent to play music, and toured the world with Santana when he was 16 years old; indeed, a lot of the guitar work on Santana III and Caravansarai that I always thought was Carlos' work was actually Schon instead - a brilliant player at such a young age.
  14. Mid-morning and I am contemplating the day's activities, and wondering how long it will be before the rain starts again; I don't think we've had two sunny days in a row since early June. It starts out nice in the morning and then it's raining by mid or late afternoon - I've seen summers like this before and they are really a piss off as our summers are short enough as it is at this latitude...
  15. Beans, beans - the musical fruit; The more you eat the more you toot! Love 'em myself, but gotta admit they can be pretty gaseous when mixed with eggs...
  16. Relaxing at home this morning getting a good start to my day by having a sexy video call by my favourite Thai girl from the last trip...
  17. Good score - I'd love to have an M model but they are just too expensive to buy and maintain; I do own another E36 model, though - it's a 1992 325i that was sold new in Japan with LHD and then imported to Canada ten years later; basically a Euro model with a couple of Japanese tweaks. I bought it three years ago with only 106,000Km on the odometer: i I also own a 2003 E46 330xi which has a lot more power and features than the 325i but it's also a lot heavier and feels like it - the old E36 can be thrown around like a go-kart and is also not too difficult to maintain - I would dearly love to find an original, unmolested E36 with a manual gearbox but it's almost impossible nowadays...
  18. Of the scores of vehicles I have owned during my life, only two have been new and they were just small cars; I really don't believe in brand loyalty and even though I presently own four Ford trucks of various sizes, it doesn't mean I am a Ford fanatic - they just happened to be what was available when I was looking. I like to own cars that are fun to drive as well as being somewhat practical and that is why I currently own a couple of old BMW's - I wouldn't buy one newer than 2002 or so because the newer ones are just too crammed full of electronic gadgets like every other vehicle these days and I like to do as much work on my own cars as I can; the further I can stay away from the "stealerships' the happier I am.
  19. I flew PE on EVA on the YVR-TPE-BKK route for 13 years, with the occasional upgrade to business, and enjoyed it thoroughly. I switched to Cathay Pacific in PE for my last trip because EVA was dropping PE from YVR with their switch to the 787, and didn't find it quite up to the standard I had enjoyed with EVA. I ended up flying home in early April on Korean Air in economy because of the closure of HKG and it was quite enjoyable but that is mainly because the plane was almost empty - I don't relish the thought of flying economy on a long flight again with a return to normal capacities - I have been spoiled now and will willingly pay extra for a more comfortable flight for the longer routes.
  20. I usually book in June or July for a November flight but I'm certainly not going to this year - if things straighten out enough by September or October I may look at December or January but the odds are that I will go somewhere else this winter for a while if I am able to...
