tommy dee
remembering the iceland volcano erupting and causing flights be cancelled, Indonesia today, well there are no flight to upset I guess Mount Sinabung in Indonesia has erupted, launching a column of ash more than 16,000ft (three miles) into the sky. The volcano's eruption comes after more than a year of volcanic activity on the island of Sumatra, and is the second since Saturday. Locals have been told to stay at least three miles (1.86km) away from the crater's mouth, and have been warned of the dangers of flowing lava. Horizondave
Don't need a mask for protection but a Bintang is a good option.

Judging by the number used those are nautical miles, three nautical miles is 5.58 KM.

Just looks like they've got their miles and kilometres mixed up as 3 km = 1.86 miles?

Nope, 1 nautical mile = 1.86 KM, but they should have posted the equivalent for 3 miles in KM, not the conversion from NM to KM.

Doubtful, they probably never even thought about nautical miles (as the exclusion zone is just over 3 statute miles) and they just had the option back to front on their converter tool. Freee!!
Does it really matter? 3 miles is (depending on the mile used) roughly somewhere between 4.8 and 5.5 KM, "three miles (1.86km)" is just a very confusing and/or incorrect message.
KWA
Of course it doesn't matter a damn, but I thought your theory was far fetched and put forward what I thought was a more logical explanation. It's just chewing the fat over trivia in a news article.

My brother was in the Fairmont in Vancouver airport for a week, flight was heading to UK before they returned. They were in Club World so got a good room at the hotel with all meals. Had a room with a great view of the airport. I would have probably preferred Bangkok myself for an extended break although Vancouver is an amazing city. I remember we were very sad when the airways opened up,could've done another month of that easily!
