Classic example of idiots and their phones (selfies, etc.). Those morons were not very far from the projectiles heading in their direction. At that velocity a pebble could have seriously injured or killed them. They should have dropped for cover the instant they recognized what was happening. lazarus
Freak waves cause damage at US army base, shut airports in remote islands https://www.rnz.co.nz/international/pacific-news/507233/freak-waves-cause-damage-at-us-army-base-shut-airports-in-remote-islands Powerful waves, driven by offshore storm surges, hit an important US military installation in the Marshall Islands on Saturday night, causing damage and resulting in the evacuation of all "non-mission personnel" from the island. Flooding caused by the waves also hit two airports at Ailinglaplap Atoll, leaving rocks, coral and debris in their wake, keeping those airports closed for weeks. Other islands reported flooding and moderate damage. The US Army in a statement on Sunday afternoon that at approximately 9pm on January 20, "a series of weather-induced waves hit Roi-Namur which caused significant flooding in the northern portions of the island"... That beached sailboat looks like it was ready to sink. I imagine the owners have it insured? That said, it has been raining hard and very windy (in San Francisco) the past day and a half, plus we had a good soaking earlier last week. Sun is supposed to shine later today (Monday), and no big storms on the horizon for at least a week. Southern California may end up being a different story as the rains are headed there (as I type). People don't realize how mountainous it is just inland from the coast (where people live). They don't call it the LA Basin for nothing.

I don't really care to repeat the experience. Well said. I experienced a couple small ones in Costa Rica back in the early/mid 90's. I don't believe there was even much damage. But it left an impression on me.

We got shaken around pretty good when the 1964 Alaska earthquake hit - it was a real biggie and did a little property damage where I live but without any injuries: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_Alaska_earthquake I was only eight years old so it was quite a novelty watching things moving around in the house. In later years I experienced a couple of earth tremors and found the experience fascinating - once I was in the unfinished basement of our house and you could actually see the concrete walls flex without breaking.
