KYC , know your client , making sure you're not a politically exposed person , most companies do this at the account set up stage  ...

although I don't remember similar questions at Wise .. 🤷‍♂️

I take it your wife hasn't received the funds yet if they are talking about cancelling the contract ... just answer the questions and it will probably go through okay

Yes first time using them & yes I did answer the questions & yes she hasn't received the funds but why don't they ask the questions before you send the money?

It's about all A.I.  and I.D. verification systems. They are all catching up with it . Once the verifications are set up with certain newly updated govt. systmen (like the IRS and and MV services, phone companies) the it will all become a breeze.

A breeze that is like one that comes from an Iowa hog farm.

A number of years ago (8 ?), before I had a Thai Bank Account, I would use XE to send a little cash to the lady who later became the Mrs.

On one transaction XE held it and I had to call them. Some minor office clerk (probably a Magatard) had held the transaction because of the first name of the person I was sending a little money to. The Mrs has one of those Thai lady names that ends in "porn". This is not unusual.

Anyway I get on the phone with this moron and she starts grilling me. I ask for her boss and she joins the call. At one point I hear the boss groan a little and mutter "are you trying to get us sued?".

Finally I ask where their office is located and they say LA. I say "ok you probably have a person of Thai decent working in your office. Please ask them about the name". They call some guy and ask him to come to their meeting room. He verifies what I am saying and the transaction is released. I hear him chuckle a bit as he leaves the room.

I never used XE again. I only put up with this in this case because the future Mrs was ill and I wanted to get her to a doctor.

When you put A.I. together with the average moron checking the red flag you can end up in a massive cluster fcuk.

If you stay with it, and are in the right place (the manager was correct). There are times you can sue these cnuts, and sometimes win big.

Anything from a foreign source is picked to shreds in many cases. Although things are improving. Check and double check your transfer and personal links. Be prepared for a number of verification probs - email, phone verifications, OTP's, security questions and even voice recognition. If you have things consistently in order and have everything (account info., etc.) at your ready you will be much better prepared when the time comes that you get an idiot like this on the other end.

Been thinking a bit about the situation that @coxyhog posted about and I have a completely unsolicited and probably useless suggestion about this going forward. I am an American and I think you are a Brit, so maybe this affects things. Also, I live full time in Thailand on an O-NonIm retirement visa. Your situation may well be different.

What I do:

  • I have a Bangkok Bank account.
  • I had the Mrs open an account with Bangkok Bank.
  • My central funds are in the US with Charles Schwab.
  • I send periodic wires from my Schwab Account to my Bangkok Bank Account. These cost $15.
  • I can then transfer from my Bangkok Bank Account to the one that the Mrs has at no cost.

I originally chose Bangkok Bank because one could route transfers through their NY branch at no cost as it was processed as a domestic transfer to the NY office. That ability was taken away a few years back. Still Bangkok Bank has pretty decent online services to enable the rest of my scheme, so I stay with them.

Not at all sure, if there are any similar possibilities that might work for you from the UK, but thought I would mention this. It took me a few years to work out this cunning plan (Black Adder reference intended).

btw - currently a transfer from Schwab to Bangkok Bank (at least for me) completes in less than two days. Are these two banks taking advantage of me with currency conversions? Most likely. I am wiling to put up with that in order to have a hassle free ongoing process.

Me & the missus have accounts with Bangkok Bank in Korat, the transfer I did on Monday reached her account on Thursday  morning. That was a tester as I'd never used Xe.com before.I did another on Thursday & I hope it gets to her on Saturday-BKK Bank is open on Saturdays. She's flying home to the UK on Sunday.

BTW when I answered the weird email I got from Xe I said something like "Why are you asking this now"....I got a nice reply thanking me for relpying to their questions.

I have and use the identical setup for transferring money to Thailand. Perhaps at some point Schwab at least will adopt the IAT format for ACH transfers and we can once again use that method for fee free transfers of money.

My experience has been I lose about .19 off the interbank transfer rate on the currency conversion. I've also been pleasantly surprised to see the last couple of SWIFT transfers hitting my account in less than 24 hours. The most recent one on March 21st took only 12 hours.

When things are set up proper, and you have no negative issues (which we all may have from time to time), then they usually go smooth.

Things can go up and down as far as timeliness with transfers.

It's kind of a game with the AI fcuks.
