Horizondave
Probably the most frightening experience of my life in July 1990 in the Philippines. I was in the Philippine Airline Office in Manila when the earthquake struck. The whole place felt like it was coming down, the girl serving us leapt across the desk and was out the door. There was a rush for the door and some just went through the plate glass doors as air cons were flying off the building and nearly hitting us as we made it to the street which was rippling with cars sliding to a halt. The buildings were swaying as if they were going to hit each other. I felt completely useless, just had to wait it out. Needed a few drinks after that but the aftershocks kept coming, I just headed later for the bars where even going to the toilet (in Superstar) was a chore, trying to aim at a metal basin that was going from side to side with drink inside was quiet a difficult task. It was really a nasty experience that I wish never to repeat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990_Luzon_earthquake

forcebwithu
Interesting article on how a 730 ton steel ball protects the tallest building in Taipei. How a steel ball protected Taiwan’s tallest skyscraper in an earthquake Video of the ball doing its thing during an earthquake in 2022. Many buildings have similar type dampening systems, one of which is the Citicorp building in NYC. Looking into that building's system led me to this very interesting, at least to me, article on a design flaw in the Citicorp building that a college student caught. forcebwithu
I'd be looking for clean underwear if I were on this road during the earthquake. 1
lazarus
Parts of California’s scenic Highway 1 have been collapsing into the Pacific Ocean in recent days, as bouts of rain lead to landslides. Today, state officials temporarily shut down a stretch of the road near Big Sur and urged local residents to evacuate since more rain is expected through Friday. Around 2,000 people live in the Big Sur area year-round.
