My TW tells me they are still legal tender and I hope she's right because we have a few bhat in Thai notes here.

If not, should be possible to exchange them for newer ones.

A friend of mine who was last in Thailand 3-4 years ago has offered to sell me Thai notes that have the old kings portrait on them, are these still legal currency?

No problem at all, in fact many Thais i know prefer the old notes depicting the last King.

I get cash from a Kungsri ATM here in Jomtien and they're still spitting out the old notes, so should be no problem.
