  3. Stopped in Waterstones on the way home from the gym and picked up a couple of paperbacks. Turned out I had £10 on my loyalty card so only cost £3.98 for the two, so a nice touch.

  8. I enjoy my mornings at the gym, do a minimum 45 minutes on the treadmill fast walking. Just helps me switch off and listen my music. Forget about the other shit in my head.

  9. Kaprow moo something... Fried belly pork krapow... the motorbike restaurant on soi 15 told me what it was, but I've forgotten. Only discovered it on my last day after watching her make it for a local... Mind you, western basil is too strong for it.

  11. Yep, same, gym helps me more mentally than physically. So does diving, and also recently discovered so does the calm, silence and peacefulness of the snowy wilderness. You can just switch off, get a reset. You should try stuff like that Gal, I'd wager it would help you like it helps me.

  13. I think this place was the American BBQ and Steakhouse just down from Flame. The vanilla milk shake was Devine and the Cajin fries were really good. I would not order the burger again though.

  14. I'm heading over to one of my favorite places. I make it a point to visit every trip and photograph the work completed since last trip. Which thanks to covid has now been 4 years. The Sanctuary of Truth is an amazing work in progress.

  17. It's our first night in Ao Nang, and we always go to this Thai place called 'Family' as it's Family run. It's up a wee alley of the main drag, but is aways packed as it's tremendous, and so cheap. I just had this pineapple rice, 70 Baht. And fried fish in chilli and garlic, 180 Baht. So 250Baht, and it was fucking lovely. Get free watermelon etc as well.

  24. I spent a while trying to figure out where the hotel we'd stayed in had been, and I finally remembered that it was the Delta Hotel in Vlaardingen, not Maassluis. This was a fun time, I was working week on/week off with another engineer and he'd found the hotel but had been told by Personnel (what we call HR these days) that it was too posh for the likes of us. It was a weird area, with the river and harbour to the south, while to the north it was mostly greenhouses kept warm by Groningen gas to grow all those Dutch fruit and vegetables. When you got to the sea you had the Hoek van Holland ferry terminal, and north of were some cheap and cheerful beach resorts like Monster. He'd argued the toss with them and eventually they relented, as nobody could find a suitable cheaper alternative. We were on 24-hour duty for the week so had to be able to get to the rig fast when called, but this hotel was 20 km from the wellsite, way too far in normal circumstances. Just north of it, though, was a very fast dual-carriageway that went to De Lier, so we could get to the rig in under 15 minutes if need be. The best part was that we were paid a generous mileage allowance, and driving to and from the rig 4 or 5 times a day meant a lot of extra Guilders in the bank account when the expenses claim was filed. Lovely jubbly.

  25. I recently had a couple of Thai craft wheat beers. Definitely not cheap at around the 150-odd Baht per half-litre can mark, but both were a lot better than the crap that the two big breweries started foisting on an unprepared and unsuspecting Thai public some years ago. The Thai Myth wheat beer was smooth and not unpleasant, but excessively fruity for my taste. I can well imagine the Thais, especially the women, liking that, though. I'm a bit doubtful and suspicious, to be honest, as to whether this degree of citrus flavour is entirely due to the brewing process, or has it been chemically enhanced, or simply had lemon juice added? The Full Moon brewery version had a better balance, at least for my palate, but early on I detected something a bit excessively yeasty in the background. It disappeared after a few minutes, anyway, and that's not a bad drink at all. Given the price, though, why would I choose either of these two when, for the same (or even less) money, I can drink Belgian or German wheat beers made by breweries with half a millennium of history and a global reputation?

  26. The damage was caused by the way the acetic acid was applied. A few tiles were pushed in a little causing the water flow to look like the wall is pissing into the pool in a couple of places. Additionally, the water flow is no longer being released as before. There are places where there is no flow. This is probably caused by a few top tiles impeding the flow and additionally the pipe having been clogged a little by the dust from the re-grouting. The new guy is going to replace the water pipe and realign the few tiles causing the problem. Unfortunately for me, he currently has a big job down the street so it will be a while and Songkran will likely affect the schedule as well. Oh, how I suffer. 🙂 Really the dummy is me. I should not have paid the final installment until I did a more rigorous check of the final product.

  36. I lived on Koh Lanta (Krabi) for three dry seasons ('06-'09) and would walk the beach (Long Beach) everyday. My gal at the time worked in a little resort with a beach bar & massage shop... Often felt like I was living in a dream. . . .
