See the Aussie government/experts are getting their knickers in a twist after their first internally transmitted 'Covid' death after 10 months in NSW.

The 91 years old woman..............

Of course it's a big deal.

Infection control and outbreaks are the responsibility of the individual states.

A number of states have gone over a year without managing to kill anyone.

image.png

NSW is the hardcore anti-lockdown state who reckon outbreaks can be managed with track and trace only.

Just under a month ago, 16th June, a transport driver became infected driving an international aircrew person to their hotel.

For ten days NSW refused to implement a lockdown allowing the infection to spread to other states as well as running rampant throughout Sydney.

Sydney is now in their third week of lockdown with no end in sight. They currently have over 500 active cases with another 100 new cases expected today. As of yesterday, 52 cases are in hospital, 15 are in ICU, 5 are on ventilators and one unnecessary death. All from being slow to react to a single case.

No doubt at least part of this unfolding disaster can be blamed on the abysmal vaccine rollout where less than 10% of the population have received any vaccination.

In Western Australia a single person brought in the infection from the Sydney cesspool.

A 4 day lockdown was immediately implemented followed by a further 2 weeks of limited restrictions. That single case had managed to infect a further 3 people but the immediate lockdown limited the spread to only 4 cases.

As of today all restrictions are lifted and life gets back to normal.

The variant is the delta variant.

I only detail the above for those who think that in an unvaccinated population, like Thailand, the shit ain't gonna hit the fan if an infection gets loose.

Wonder if Spicy's still in complete denial, what with the Indonesian health system close to collapse due to record Covid infections and death.  Probably, would probably be the answer ...

Also, more and more data coming out that the Chinese Sinovac is useless against the Delta variant, as shown in say Indonesia and the amount of Doctors and health care workers dying despite being jabbed with it, and Thailand basically 'switching' to AZ.

Who's have thought it ...

Sadly same picture in the UK as the US on vaccination by ethnicity

image.pngChart is slightly out-of date.

Finer grained data from 8th of July has White British over 50s 95.4% having a first dose, White Irish like myself hit 90.4%.  Huge worry that in Caribbean over 50%s the rate in only 66.1% (source below). Rates tend to higher in those from an African background versus the Caribbean, the chart aggregates more finely defined groups.

https://www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2021/07/COVID-19-monthly-announced-vaccinations-08-July-2021.xlsx

In terms of letting the Indian variant run wild in the UK is the elephant in the room that no one in the press or government is openly speaking about.

I'm totally behind the the UK fully reopening, but the consequences are obvious but won't be pretty.

Black folks in the US don't trust the healthcare system.

Factors Associated With Racial/Ethnic Group–Based Medical Mistrust and Perspectives on COVID-19 Vaccine Trial Participation and Vaccine Uptake in the US

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2780402

Conclusions and Relevance

"In this survey study of US adults, racial/ethnic group–based medical mistrust partially mediated the association between individuals identifying as Black and low rates of acceptance of COVID-19 vaccine trial participation and actual vaccination. The findings suggest that partnerships between health care and other sectors to build trust and promote vaccination may benefit from socially and culturally responsive strategies that acknowledge and address racial/ethnic health care disparities and historical and contemporary experiences of racism."

. . .

For Latinos there are other issues. Many want the vaccine but for various reason have not gotten it.

Survey: Hispanics Are the Most Eager to Get Vaccinated – but Face Obstacles
One-third of unvaccinated Hispanics say they want the COVID-19 shots, compared with 17% of Blacks and 16% of whites, according to survey results.

https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2021-05-14/latinos-are-most-eager-to-get-covid-vaccine-but-face-obstacles

"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only about 13% of people in the U.S. who have received at least one vaccine dose are Hispanics, though they make up about 17% of the overall population. (Only about half of the CDC’s data includes the race or ethnicity of vaccinated individuals.)

Among unvaccinated Hispanics, 64% were worried about missing work because of vaccine side effects, and 52% were concerned about having to pay for the shots — although the shots are offered at no cost. These numbers are even higher for Hispanics who lacked lawful permanent resident status.

“It’s hard for somebody who lives day-to-day to take off half a day to come to a clinic and try to get a vaccination,” said Dr. José Pérez, chief medical officer of the South Central Family Health Center, a nonprofit health organization with clinic locations throughout South Los Angeles. “If they don’t work that day, they don’t earn a living and they don’t eat.”

Those facing immigration issues were more likely to be worried about being asked to show government-issued ID or a Social Security number, according to the KFF survey."

Thanks- the data/background on the Hispanics population is interesting. Makes the low acceptance rates more understandable when people are living day to day.

For the Caribbean population here, there's similar trust issues I'd guess but to be honest I can't offer any insight as to reasons for such a low uptake.

I had thought people's trust in the National Health Service would have been far higher than other UK bodies (Government, Police e.t.c) . People from the Caribbean have made a huge contribution as workers in the N.H.S so sad to see such a relatively low uptake but the figures for the US above are way worse.

Again I'm all for re-opening normal life but the Delta variant will steam roller through the unvaccinated with health issues.

I have nothing to corroborate this but my suspicion is that it is something to do with religion. They are being pedalled a load of disinformation by their preachers about, for example, the vaccine containing bits of monkey, or that it affects women's menstrual cycles.

Exactly. I've heard a few interesting canards lately. One (on Facebook) was that if you were close to a vaccinated person - as in a hug - you 'd become ill.

Researchers are trying hard to find inroads to reach the vax-hesitant crowd. Anti-vaxxers are a lost cause.

Here's a report I read last night...

Peer Pressure, Not Politics, May Matter Most When It Comes To Getting The COVID-19 Vaccine

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/peer-pressure-not-politics-may-matter-most-when-it-comes-to-getting-the-covid-19-vaccine/

...one in three Republicans reported that friends or family had advised them not to get the vaccine or that they had received mixed messages about the importance of getting one.

This finding is noteworthy because while partisanship is a factor in influencing our behaviors, social science research consistently shows that our friends exert a profound — and often invisible — influence on us. For instance, if you have friends who smoke or are obese, your chances of smoking or being obese increase significantly.

So it may be for getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

Americans whose immediate social circle was entirely vaccinated were far more likely than those with fewer vaccinated friends to have gotten the vaccine themselves per the study by the Survey Center on American Life. And despite reporting higher rates of vaccine hesitancy overall, this was true among Republicans as well. Ninety-three percent of Republicans whose friends were at least partially vaccinated had also been vaccinated. By contrast, only 19 percent of Republicans with just a few or no friends who were partially vaccinated said that they had gotten the jab.

Scotland is to move to level zero of Covid restrictions on 19 July, but mandatory use of face coverings is to remain in place for "some time".

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the planned easing had to be modified due to the spread of the Delta variant.

The move to level zero means more people will be allowed to meet indoors and attend weddings and funerals.

However, limits on outdoor meetings are to be maintained, and the return of workers to offices is to be delayed.

Ms Sturgeon said "sensible precautions" had to be maintained while the vaccine programme continues.

Interesting opinion from a local doctor at the city's largest hospital...

...Dr. Chris Colwell, chief of emergency medicine Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, issued a dire warning about the infectiousness of the Delta variant, telling the station, "I really believe we are at a point where we can say pretty confidently that you're either going to be vaccinated or you're going to have COVID." ...

Indeed, and i feel for those who can't get vaccinated due to health issues, they need to shield again, if they ever haven't in the past 18 months.

Though i have no sympathy whatsoever to any fuckwits who were offered and refused the vaccine. Let them take their chances.

My sympathy would be with the health professionals who will continue to be professional and treat such fuckwits, despite having had an unprecedented workload for the past 18 months.

Netherlands cases increase by 500% in a week after reopening

In news that may not bode well for England, the Netherlands has seen a huge surge in cases after it scrapped nearly all remaining restrictions and reopened nightclubs in late June.

The government was forced to backtrack and reimpose restrictions, with Prime Minister Mark Rutte apologising and calling it an "error of judgement".

Nightclubs have been closed again until at least 13 August and bars will have to shut at midnight.

Nearly 52,000 people in the Netherlands tested positive for COVID-19 over the past week - increasing by more than 500%.

Officials said that of the infections that could be tracked to their source, 37% happened in a hospitality venue such as a bar or club.

Hospital admissions increased by 11%, or 60 COVID-19 patients, over the past week.

If we don't get night clubs, bars, music venues open now they won't get opened this year, and if we carry on like this then we might as well forget about them ever opening as, without continuing government support, they will all be bankrupt.

We have to live with Covid, not live in fear of it.
