Back in the late 70's when my father had retired my parents were looking at a wonderful place in the Smokies (Western North Carolina). Very beautiful, yet very rural. They eventually ended up in a very nice area near Chapel Hill (UNC and many other well known medical facilities and providers). They made a very good decision in factoring this in, as it probably added years to what turned out to be a very happy and comfortable retirement. I certainly made note of this (along with many other wise decisions they made throughout the years). Yep - saw a similar thing myself years ago. An older long time customer/friend of mine retired, and he and his wife sold up and moved to Tasmania. The wife (2nd) was a nit of a greenie and they bought a farm. I went there a few years later to visit them and it was very 'confused'. He had spent a lot of time and money fixing up the old house and building lots of new stuff - she was happy growing 'organic' fruit and selling it. They were very remote and it was a long country road just to the shops. Needless to say I heard he had moved back to the smoke some years later - seems the 2nd wife was happy to stay on the farm - she had family nearby. I learned a lot of lessons from that and similar things that happened to blokes I knew over the years:- Never marry a western woman again - every bloke who I knew who did it, ended up divorced again (except one). Never retire away from the big smoke and all the medical and other 'necessaries' - there is a reason people live in cities. Never move and live near your wife's family - you are temporary, her family is permanent.

Certainly that applies in the west - but I disagree with that sentiment when over 60 and in SEAsia. As long as you have all your money safely tucked away, then having someone to live with that will also look after you, is more and more important when you get very old (75-80+). There is a guy I know that is now in his 80s, and after decades of enjoying life in Thailand post two western divorces, he is desperate to find 'a good one' that will look after him as he gets older and sicker. I think he has left it too late. My advice is to not leave it too late. There are many good ones - you just gotta look in the right places - Pattaya bars and places aint likely to be one of them. 2 1

Golfingboy
Eugene Melnyk, billionaire owner of the Ottawa Senators hockey club, passed at only 62 from illness, a few years after undergoing a liver transplant. My parents ran into him a few times at one of his restaurants in Barbados, which was his second home after Canada . Shows you money can’t buy everything……RIP
Golfingboy
Paul Herman has passed on his 76th birthday. Sopranos fans like me, will know him as Beansie, the poor guy who refused to get extorted and ended up in a wheelchair for the rest of the series. Also was in Goodfellas as a drug dealer in the motel…..”you wanna see helicopters”. Was in Casino and The Irishman as well. Only 13 episodes of Mr Benn until a new release in 2005 though, I always thought there were more than that!. The series was narrated by Ray Brooks. 2

Especially at that age. If you set things up properly you can still "take care" of them as they take care of you - without going through the bullshit "marriage" game.

I've been in such a relationship 10 years and still counting. She'll be well taken care of on my passing, no marriage needed or required for that to happen.
biggles
Same for me, 76 now and ten years together. She will be very well provided for. No divorce here in the Philippines anyway and the 'annulment' is just a scam for the lawyers and the church hierarchy.
