No they are not!

They are racing against the clock with NO RESTRICTIONS on how fast they can go on the race course. The track itself defines the speeds they can go and like all racers, to win, you have to push the limits based on your ability, the capabilities of the motorbike you are driving and the track you’re racing on.

This is a timed lap of a CLOSED road that has been held for 50+ years.
No one has to enter, these riders do so at their own risk, just like any motorcar or motorcycle race anywhere in the world.
Should jumping out of a perfectly serviceable airplane to skydive or parachute be banned, because on rare occasions someone dies in an accident?
F1 and MotoGP drivers race at much higher speeds on tracks that have every possible safety systems built into the track design, yet every now and again a race driver dies in an accident.

How many people die in road accidents each year on roads that have been designed and built to high safety standards? Would you ban all driving on roads?

These riders are highly skilled motorcyclist who are the best in the world. They accept the risks involved, but like all risky sports, sadly, accidents happen from time to time and people die, that is the nature of all high speed sports. 👌

Yes they are - the roads they use are public roads - it is not a private or closed 'race track' - with approval of local authorities the roads are closed - but they are still public roads.  Your analogies are false - they are racing motor bikes in extremely dangerous conditions. The issue becomes liability and responsibility - one day things will come to a head.  If they built a private racetrack on the island, than is a separate matter and your analogies are valid.

However, you are right about them deciding to do it themselves and that they are highly skilled riders and it is extremely well organised. I have several DVDs on the racing and 'closer to the edge' is unbelievable. I am a big fan of racing - especially MotoGp.  But IMO it is far too dangerous on the Isle of Man and it should be banned.

Look up the Nurgergring and the changes made due to the deaths, and the legal cases where families have sued the track owners, local authorities, etc.  The days are gone where anyone can do anything dangerous willingly and there are no legal and bureaucratic repercussions when people get killed.  People racing motor bikes should not be hitting brick walls or telegraph poles IMO - that should be banned - whether they are willing or not.

The voice of common sense.

Many sports are dangerous and if we banned them all there wouldn't be much left. If anything boxing is the one that should be banned as you are basically smashing f**k out of someone.

For me, motorcycle road racers are some of the bravest sport's men and women in the world. To race at those speeds takes the highest of skills, and if you ride a motorcycle yourself you'll appreciate their talents even more.

No doubt about it - they are extremely brave and talented.  Agree about boxing.

Boxing is a weird one. No doubt many ex- fighters have the dreaded pugilistic dementia, punch drunk syndrome. But then you also had Jake Lamotta live to almost 100 after absorbing so much punishment, as well as 🇨🇦 George Chuvalo being lucid into his 80’s having been smacked around just as much in HW division too

And you’ve had several boxers drop dead from a single punch/bout……who knows?

But boxing IS a dangerous sport, don’t care if they have padded 12 ounce gloves on, you’re trying to kill the other guy

"Pickles", my Grandson's hamster, sadly passed away last night. He took it quite well and buried him in an empty cereal carton in the garden. Pickles was nearly 4 years old and had no living relatives. RIP

Personally I am glad the little bastard is dead 😁😁

It taunted the cat, giving it large while being protected by a cage and spent most of its time, stuffing its face with old bits of cabbage😁

Basically just a rat living in luxury 😀😀. I would never say that to my grandson of course.

I was listening to a podcast by one of the guys who did the animal studies on what is now called Molnupiravir.

Apparently they used dwarf hamsters which are about the size of a mouse. Down size.

That is not the issue - they are using public roads and they are therefore subject to laws and restrictions.

What laws and restrictions would they be?

You do realise that when you get out the town areas, once you get into the mountain areas, there are no road speed limits year round?.

Though you can be prosecuted if the police judge your riding or driving dangerous.

Ideally these posts about the IOM TT should really be moved to the bike porn thread, if some kind mod fancies doing it.

RIP Pickles. Hopefully during your short life you taught your young owner some valuable life lessons on caring for others, sex and finally death.

I really don't want to think about the day when my best mate passes away..

French sidecar passenger Olivier Lavorel age 35 was killed in the opening lap of yesterday's sidecar TT. The race was cancelled and will be held today.

The driver was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

It was Olivier's first TT but he was an experienced passenger.

RIP

Another one , not unusual at the TT  , once a IOM work colleague died at the race brought it a little closer home ..

Davy Morgan's 80th TT race so a highly experienced road racer.

Always gonna happen every TT but no way would I want the race banned and the chance to race in memory of those fallen taken away. Road racers are a very close community due to the danger's of the sport.

RIP
