Obituary/RIP Recent Passings (Threads Merged)

Ken Holtzman died at 78. One of the best Southpaws to ever pitch. I saw him pitch at Wrigley in '69. A power pitcher, leftie. Threw two no-hitters in one season which is remarkable.

Back then there weren't many lefties around, especially of that caliber. And he ate up a ton of innings, often going into late innings or complete games (very rare now). He was an absolute workhorse, and very difficult to hit.

RIP Ken, thanks for being part of great memories.

Sadly Dickie Betts is gone.

It is interesting that one of his sons is named Duane. The dual guitars of Betts and Duane Allman were incredible.

My favorite song remains "Whipping Post", which is probably more about the dual drummers, but still highlights the overall strengths of the band.

Duane was considered by many as one of the greatest guitarists ever. I think Dickey was up there as well.

The two together... nothing comes close.

I like the song "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" on the "Live at the Filmore" album - it showcases both of the guitarist's styles perfectly; also the shorter instrumental "Hot 'Lanta" on the same album. I think Dickey should be remembered mostly for keeping the band going after Duane's death,  tremendous will and tenacity to take on this task after such a devastating loss...

Absolutely.... tremendous album. They had also lost their Bassists - Berry Oakley.

I remember him when I was a little kid. I was a Bears fan  - that will always be the case. But, because of him, at the time the Rams were my #2.

Wow!  Thanks for posting this Gord.....sad day for me as I am a big Moody Blues fan...wifey likes them too. She said their lyrics are easy to understand. Mike Pinder sadly left the group in 1978, after they recorded the album " Octave" He did not want to tour, Dec 1978 at the Oakland Coliseum Arena was the first time I ever saw them. Justin Hayward, John Lodge, Graeme Edge and Ray Thomas were all there. They let Patrick Moraz do that tour when Pinder did not want to go out with them.  They were great that night.....just a great band live.

Difficult to believe guys.

Their music is deeply ingrained.

So thankful to have been able to enjoy, appreciate and sing their music.
