  1. I dropped into the Las Vegas complex for the first time last night; the place was probably between 2/3 and 3/4 full and the band appeared to be beginning for the evening. I sat at a bar about a quarter of the way in and had a Sangsom, and bought a drink for a girl there. I think my drink was 80b and hers was 170b. I was enjoying chatting with her and then the band started and like most music bars, it was simply too loud to have an easy conversation. There was a noise meter quite close to this bar and it was hovering between 95 - 100db while the band played. I think it's a nice place and I will go back but I'll definitely be sitting as close to the entrance as possible if the band is on.

  3. M'lady has been out on her morning "Faller Patrol" to see what fruits were on the ground and which were ready for picking. For the first time she picked each type of mango that she grows.. - Four big trees of the "normal" mango that you get with sticky rice or unripe for the bar girls on their periods! - One bush of the "rosy cheeked" round one which I had never seen before moving here. - One bush of the "miniature" mango, lovely and sweet but a bit messy to eat ....

  17. Some pics from the temple and museum, before these while driving through the army base I found a free zoo, wasn't a nice place to be honest, gibbons, maquak s,black bear and other animals all locked up in small cages,I bought some buckets of fruit and fed them,it's sold by army guys who run the place. Interestingly the museum was built around tools and log coffins the pows found while building death railway, the coffins were discovered in a couple of the caves I'd visited last time.

  18. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again...lol...I took plenty of lumps when I was learning to ride motorcycles but I ended up being pretty good at it and had some world class dirt bikes later - I miss those days, sold my last dirt bike two years ago because I just don't have the reflexes anymore or the commitment to practise all the time - plus I know if/when I bite the dirt it's gonna hurt too much at this age.

  20. My next door neighbor just moved out. She was nice, no issues. My other two neighbors are off on long holidays. The quiet in the hood is wonderful. The only thing making noise are the birds. Can't get much better.

  24. I didn't watch the vid. But I can easily visualize. Stuff like that never fails to baffle me. ---------- A couple years ago in Central CM (Loi Kroh Road. Intersection (there is a police box there), just past the canal bridge. Walking. I approached the corner sidewalk area at the intersection. No traffic, yet I pause anyway (I suppose habit). I sensed something. Then I hear a motorbike whizzing along travelling toward the intersection. Something seemed odd. It was the sound, it wasn't slowing down. I waited with one foot on the roadway, the other on the curb, still in pause mode. A small car comes from the cross direction, enters the intersection. The motorbike impacts the side of the car. The bike shatters into dozens of pieces. The bike driver flies over the car, bounces off the pavement and lands about a yard from my foot in the roadway. The bike driver was screaming and writhing in agony. I thought to myself. "Well, at least he is screaming. He will probably make it."

  25. Absolutely. Pattaya presents a distorted perspective. Years ago as I branched out my eyes were opened, new discoveries, experiences and learning opportunities around every corner. My outlook on people in general became more positive, yet I maintained a reasonable level of wariness. Pattaya still has some quality people with truly good hearts, and I will always visit. For those who have hesitated to explore outside of there consider what's beyond. Doing so may change your life for the better.

  28. Many a pick truck loaded down with clothes, water and food went from Phuket to the Kao Lak area donated by Thai's and foreigners alike. There was no discrimination on who received help. Many a foreigner almost emptied their wardrobes to donate. Others emptied their wallets or purses when a whip round was made in the small beer bar area in Karon. 300,000 baht in under an hour. This was given to "Freddie Mercury" who turned it into the above supplies and shipped it north. I just wish that he hadn't showed us all the photos he took though. Many foreigners volunteered their time and expertise to build temporary accommodation in Khao Lak. Many, many acts of kindness and compassion were seen. 3 months later all back to normal unfortunately.

  33. Great post, Even the media glossed over the kindness that the Thai people extended to foreigners during that Tsunami period, also, when the Airport was taken over during the change of Govt (choosing my words carefully due to forum rules) - Many Thai people helped those stranded at the Airport by bringing food, taking care of the children and generally also being helped a lot by the people occupying the Airport at the time who gave ration packs and ensured there was plenty of water to go around. As for good farangs, in Pattaya I think more so in recent years, foreigners look upon other foreigners with suspicion. I got chatting to an Aussie bloke in a bar who told me that for every 10 blokes he meets, at least 3 of them have an angle of some description. I think Pattaya can erode the kindness of people somewhat, but as @Nightcrawler said in his excellent post, Pattaya is somewhat of a bubble. I've seen some bloody horrific behaviour by farangs in pattaya, but on the flipside I've seen acts of kindness that go largely unnoticed, but they never go unappreciated if they're genuine acts of kindness towards a Thai.

  34. To this day I thank the local co-op for introducing me to Gewurzstraminer ! Probably the best afternoon I spent with my Mum sitting in her garden before she died and we both fancied a drink so I drove into town. It was a lovely hot summers day and it was the only wine left in any of the fridges in town. Bloody hell 9% German muck I thought to myself as I bought a bottle..... I got home and poured a glass each. Oh My Buddha was I wrong! Straight back into town and emptied the fridge!! Thank You Co-op for a wonderful afternoon with my slightly tipsy Mum !!

  37. Foreigner played at first concert I attended. It was The Day of Rock and Roll, in the Superdome. I still can’t believe our parents let my brothers and I drive over 200 miles to New Orleans by ourselves. My older brother was 17, I was 15 and my little brother was 11 or 12. They would probably be arrested if they did that today. Christopher Cross opened, followed by Cheap Trick, then Foreigner. The Eagles finished out the night. I think the tickets were about $12.
