Yes, thanks Lambik. Forgot to put up a pic of the real thing !

I must say, I was really pissed off when I saw the plate coming.

I understand it is difficult or nearly impossible to find sole here, but than dont advertize it !

Found a Belgian place in Seminyak, 20 min from here, called BEL CHIC to explore soon.  It has good reviews on Google and T.A. , some from Belgian people.

Had a look at their Facebook.

Looks promising (Vol au Vent - Stoemp - Rollmops...)

Wish there was such a place in Bangkok.

Curious to read your review.

Well, just back home, stomach filled and happy.

The place is very new (1 month), the owner is a Balinese guy born in Germany, who has lived 20 years in Antwerp, speak fluently Flemish, has owned a restaurant in Australia, owns a burger place in Bali, but decided to open something more "specialized"

The place is not big, not trying to be HiSo, fans no A/C, owner confirmed he wanted to be able to keep reasonable price so to attract the local Belgian expatriate community as a regular customer base.

To cut it short the food I had was perfect and tasted like at home, and all this at very reasonable prices. Note this is Seminyak, a bit like the local St Tropez.

A quick look at the daily special :

And they have quite a few Belgian specialities (Bitterballen, Frikadel…). Although I thought bitterballen was more a Dutch thing ?

I had the escargots (10), perfect taste and texture. Served with bread so you can clean up the persil butter sauce...

Followed by the traditional "Stoofcarbonade" or "Carbonade Flamande" , a beef stew with beer.

The beef was really tender, not chewy at all, and no fat.  Presentation would have been better in a round casserole IMO, but dipping a french frie in it, you immediately go "yep, THIS is the real thing"  As we say it tasted "comme a la maison"   "like at home" !

I did not have a dessert as I planned to visit a few more bars in the area later on.

2 Stella, Escargots (10) and the stew 328,000 IDR (750 B) but worth every cent of it.  For the Cheap Charlies, have water instead of the beers and you save like 130 K IDR

Definitively a place I will go back to, and I know the Miss will love it as well.

@Lambik : Next time I plan the mussels and the vol au vent !

Soft drinks - I tend to have  lemon or lime juice.  I am not averse to a white wine, provided it is not too dry or a beer.

Just my opion : drinks like fruit juices will denaturate the taste of the food.

Where as an appropriate wine (red or white, dry or sweet) will enhance the flavor of the dish.

Beer will fit with most, but will not enhance the flavor.

Water (sparkling or flat) is of course neutral, and my 2nd choice. I also tend to have a better digestion with water.

On the other hand wine (any type) with an Asian dish will have a double negative effect. The wine will kill the (spicy) taste of the dish, and the spicy dish will dilute completely the taste of the wine.

Also the country culture will have its effect. In Belgium they will drink beer with stew, where as in France we will favor a strong red wine.

But hey,thats just my 2 eurocentime !

Thought it might have been coconut, that what I usually have.

You eat mostly the same stuff I do in Pattaya. I was disappointed Oishi buffet closed at Avenue. Meant to be opening again in Central, though not sure if a buffet. You could maybe do a recon for me 🙂

There are these premises in Central Festival.  I will take a closer look next time I am in Central Festival.7363EB5F-DF3B-4642-9B42-1C89DF6A14C5.png

Dinner at Ruenthai (Ruen Thai) just off Second Road.  Cost 780 baht including the cocktails.  Steamed rice also included but not photographed.

We usually visit this restaurant about twice during each trip.  Last night there was an error on the bill, an overcharge.  The way we have always operated in restaurants is that my partner always settles the bill, albeit with my money.  She obviously checks the bills probably more carefully than I would and spotted an item on the bill which we did not have.  The conversation was all in Thai so I am not sure exactly what was said, but the incorrect item was removed and the bill settled for the correct amount.  This was the only time that we have had an error there, so I am giving them the benefit of the doubt on this occasion.

Went there a couple of years ago, found the food to be hit or miss, although the dancing prawns were lovely.

The main bugbear was when a waiter knocked over the little burner on the table, and the fuel splashed up on my leg -- I was wearing dress shorts -- and burnt my leg, thankfully not badly. A quick "sorry" from the waiter and off he went. I had to ask for a cloth and ice to apply to my leg, and I am still waiting. Check bin, goodbye.

Never went back.
