I think I paid around £350 at spec savers for varifocals thin lens anti reflective coating and titanium frames but that was just over a year ago.

Thanks...How long did it take from walking in the door the first time and taking ownership of your glasses..??

EDIT = I've just checked the local spec savers and they are also "audioligists" ...SO MAYBE I CAN GET MY HEARING SORTED OUT TOO !!!

As Mr Luke, my thinned varifocal with anti this and anti that and reacalite coating were, from memory, £380, last October. The turn around was 2 weeks from first visit, bearing in mind I took a prescription in from elsewhere.

The product, however, i have an issue with... in that whilst i can see, i end up with an eye strain headache, as I believe (confirmed by the lady in euro optics) that specsavers measured the distance between my pupils incorrectly,  and although only my 1.5mm, this means my eyes are trying to not be cross-eyed outwards to see in focus, if that makes sense. As I collected them only a couple of days before coming out here (bad planning on my part), I've had no opportunity to return yet to see what their response is. For the past 3 months I've been back wearing my old pair, and looking through an ice skating rink as the anti scratch coating isnt very effective....

As for the audiologists, not all branches offer it, and some branches share the staff, meaning appointments can be weeks ahead. Initial consultation is (or was) free, followed by £80 per ear.

It all depends on how long you are in the UK for... 2 weeks or less and I think you'd be pushing it for both ears and eyes, unless you can get someone to make the ear and eye exam appts for you ahead of time. Chosing/ paying for and then collecting glasses can be done without appointment

It was about 10 years ago but I also had a bad experience with Specsavers. I ordered varifocals, but it took them 3 attempts before they got the lenses correct.

Now I choose to pay a bit extra and go to a local optician.

That's my plan when i return next month.  I'll give specsavers a chance to rectify the problem, but if not/next time I'll pay the extra and stick with the family firm who've done my eye checks since I was about 10

1 week.  Just addressing Barry's point they do offer some form of guarantee if varifocals are not suited to your eyes; I am not sure of the precise terms.

Yes, to their credit, they did not quibble. It was just the hassle, inconvenience and delay which niggled me.

If I approach from the North is it on the left or right side..

I was assuming Royal Garden ran East to West.... 😀

Enter Royal Garden from 2nd road. Go up one flight of stairs. She's on the right hand side as you head towards the beach, about half way down, on a corner next to a corridor to somewhere. If you find the info desk, and look over the info ladies left shoulder you'll probably see it....

Alternatively enter from Beach road, go up one flight of stairs, and she's on the left side heading towards 2nd road, slightly hidden as she's on a corner of the corridor to somewhere. If you see the info desk, turn around, you've gone too far.

Open 11am to 3pm, closed Sundays.

I have awful sense of direction living here.

Lived most of my life on the western shore of Lake Michigan (Milwaukee), so I'm conditioned to expect east to be in the direction of a large body of water. Had to reverse that thinking, along with driving on the non-right side of the road, with the move to Pattaya.

In the days gone past I used to rent a car from Heathrow then head on down the M3...So many times it confused me that the South West was bottom right of me rather than bottom left as it is seen on the map !!!

Living here though, I am very good at the geographical relationship between places, I just get mixed up with compass points..It seems so odd to have the sea West of me!!

Oh my Buddha !!!!

After all this time fannying about wasting valuable time discussing compass points, Wise can't transfer in funds from TSB!! I get the OTP..I have the funds in my account but it fails!

New look WISE website design my arse!!

Just get the fucking thing working !!!

Do you access your TSB account through Wise or do you log on seperately and do a manual transfer?  I always do the latter as I'm never comfortable with having a middleman in there increasing the potential for something to go wrong IMO.

Currently I do the automatic transfer, only because the longterm problem of OTPs for my Visa and Mastercards..

This morning's problem has magically fixed itself so it is all systems go for Euro Optic (RGP Northern side - enter from either the East or West entrance)

@Derek Dangleberries regarding your ear issue.... and rather than start another thread I thought I'd put it here as it's already been mentioned....

There is an ENT clinic at the northern end of 3rd road, up towards North Pattaya Road. It is on the east side of the street. The chap working there is an ENT specialist at one of the pattaya hospitals during the day, but does 3 evening sessions at this clinic.  It's a turn up and take a number place, therefore there is a wait. Hours are something like 5.30 to 7.30, sorry, cant remember which days or costs involved.

Thanks mate!

I am undecided what to do.

- I don't want to introduce a problem before I fly. It has been too bloody long without seeing my sons !!

- I will try and find out more about suing the Army whilst in UK and don't want them to lay the cause on something happening here..

Thanks Again !!

Okely Dokely!

I have been without wifi due to the hotel was shite.. but that is another story.

I went into RGP on Saturday and what a wonderful woman! So bloody helpful! We spent some time just talking about why I want glasses because she pointed out the most obvious point that I wasn't wearing any and seemed to be walking around fine!

She also brought up the option of fitting new lenses into my existing frames which is something that I hadn't put a lot of thought into....

Our plan is for me to bring my existing glasses in then she will do the tests and we'll go from there...

I bought a couple of good quality frames over 12 years ago in the US and have only replaced the lenses since then. Kind of amazed how well they've held up all those years, but maybe time to replace them as the enamel on the frames is feeling rough to the touch from the acidic skin oil eating away at it.

  • 2 months later...

Paid a visit to Euro Optic today. First time at Dr. Maria's new location in RGP which led to some confusion on my part as after getting off the escalator I went into the first shop I saw that had the word "Optic" in the sign.

The first clue I was in the wrong place was after the guy wrote down the new Rx I questioned how my vision got better in the six years since my last test. Never did get a clear answer to that, just a blank look of not understanding the question.

The next clue was the guy quoted me a 50% higher price for the computer lenses vs the book reading lenses. His excuse, because they were made for a greater distance.

After many decades of vision testing and purchasing frames and lenses, it's pretty easy to tell when you're dealing with someone that hasn't been adequately trained, and is trying to rip you off.

It was at this point I asked when Dr. Maria would be back and from the ensuing back and forth that resulted established his place wasn't Euro Optic. I apologized for taking his time, but at the same time wondered why he didn't clue me in I was in the wrong shop when the old Rx I handed him had Euro Optic and their logo on the top of the sheet.

The moral of this story is there are many substandard optical shops here, and it pays to listen to others' recommendations. It was like night and day when I finally made it into Dr. Maria's shop and she did the vision tests. The result was my reading Rx was slightly worse, but on the plus side the cost of the lenses where the same for the computer and book glasses.

Total damage was 10K for two frames and lenses. Lenses were the same price as six years ago, 2K for each pair.

I'd be very happy with that for 2 pairs of glasses in the UK from a decent independant optician. Excellent recommendation.
