  2. I've been to Yellowstone many times, backpacking and hiking the trails in the park and whitewater boating the area rivers. Just an outstandingly beautiful area. Me and my boating buddy had a favorite stupid human trick we liked to pull while in the park. While driving through the park we'd pull over, jump out of our truck and just stand there and point off into the distance. Within a short time we'd have a gaggle of vehicles of all sorts pulled up behind us. People would jump out and look in the direction of where we were pointing. Soon a few of them would wander over to me and my buddy and ask where's the wildlife. We'd respond, we didn't see any wildlife, we just stopped to admire the natural beauty of the park. And with that they'd shake their heads in frustration, hop back into their vehicles and leave, not understanding there's more to Yellowstone than taking pictures of wild animals.
  3. Superb life. Taking the downs with the same stoicism as the ups. Strong fellah!
  4. I wonder if he'll be deemed unfit to fly by the airline. Good chance he could be denied boarding as I understand his reduced mobility and health issues are quite visible.
  5. In H.S. we took a tour of the B&S assembly plant in Milwaukee. It was an interesting tour. Saw first hand every step of the assembly process, including the QC done on a random selection of the completed engines. What struck home with me from that tour is seeing the men and women on the assembly line, doing the same task over and over again until the end of their shift. Kudos to those that can do that, and it's an honest days work for a living, but it's not a job I could ever do.

  8. Artist responds as Australian billionaire Gina Rinehart demands National Gallery remove her portrait An Australian artist has responded to criticism levelled by mining billionaire Gina Rinehart, who reportedly demanded his painting of her be removed. “I paint the world as I see it,” Namatjira said on Thursday. “People don’t have to like my paintings, but I hope they take the time to look and think, ‘why has this Aboriginal bloke painted these powerful people? What is he trying to say?’ I paint people who are wealthy, powerful, or significant – people who have had an influence on this country, and on me personally, whether directly or indirectly, whether for good or for bad. “Some people might not like it, other people might find it funny, but I hope people look beneath the surface and see the serious side too.” Another example of Namatjira's work for a particular BM.

Fury as NFL star Harrison Butker says women can’t have careers There are calls for a famous American footballer to be fired after he gave a misogynistic speech that claimed a woman’s most important role was a “homemaker”. Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker sparked a global outcry after speaking to the graduates at Benedictine College and suggesting that women – who make up half of the world’s population – should not be in the workplace, stating it was a “diabolic lie” that they could have careers. The 28-year-old, who has made his conservative Catholic beliefs well known, also attacked the LGBTQI+ community by referring to Pride Month as a deadly sin and took aim at US President Joe Biden for supporting a woman’s right to abortion. Backlash to the 20-minute speech has been huge, with the NFL quickly issuing a statement stating the three-time Super Bowl champion’s views are not those of the organisation’s. https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/news-life/fury-as-nfl-star-harrison-butker-says-women-cant-have-careers/news-story/17a38a7363467982c2eb56c56884a820

  16. I've had a Skype number ever since I moved here. I'm now letting it expire, which will happen next week, as I've switched to using Google Voice. I've stopped using my Skype number as it no longer works for receiving OTP SMS messages, whereas GV does. Like you, I use my son's home address as my stateside address. On the rare occasion I get mail I need to see or respond to, he'll scan and email me a copy.
  17. I never looked at what the active ingredient in Soffel was. I bought the jug of citronella as I knew it was effective as a repellent, but less so than DEET. I spray my legs and ankles before I head out in the evening. Both products seem to be equally effective as when I eventually stumble home I don't have any bites from my evening out. And that's with the majority of the time spent in open air bars.
  18. Are kaffir limes racist? The word used to describe this deep-green citrus fruit with skin folded like a Klingon's brow has a fascinating past. Let's begin in Sri Lanka about 350 years ago when Portuguese and Arab traders brought with them people from the east of Africa to work as staff and soldiers. Many stayed and intermarried. For generations, their descendants have had their own language and customs. They proudly call themselves Sri Lankan Kapiri. In English, Kapiri is "kaffir". The word comes to us from Arabic, where kafir means infidel or unbeliever. It is used as a racist term of abuse in South Africa, where it is considered as vile as the N-word. These little limes are known botanically as Citrus hystrix. They are native to Sri Lanka and also found in Mauritius, where they are called papeda, and vast swathes of south-east Asia, including Thailand, where they are known as makrut. In the late 1800s, Scottish botanist H. F. MacMillan introduced the fruit growing in Sri Lanka to the English-speaking world, using the name kaffir lime. The name has stuck. In South Africa, it would seem that this etymology is accepted, and they describe the fruit as kaffir lime, where other uses of the K-word are considered so offensive a woman was jailed in 2018 for abusing a black policeman with the word. But like many chefs and food writers in Australia, Britain and the US, Good Food has chosen to adopt the Thai name, makrut, instead. https://www.smh.com.au/goodfood/why-many-consider-kaffir-lime-a-racist-name-20200831-h1qen5.html
