Mamba fangs are quite short (around 5 - 6 mm in adults) and are hollow with a narrow slit at the front near the tip where the venom exits. fygjam
Sounds a bit like a 2 week millionaire. The sex life – or more precisely, death – of the antechinus was already a gory affair. And it just got grislier. The male carnivorous marsupials copulate so fiercely their bodies fall apart and their organs shut down. At the end of their annual one- to three-week mating frenzy, nearly all the females are pregnant and their sires are dead. In August last year, naturalist Elliot Bowerman was hiking to Point Lookout in New England National Park in north-eastern NSW. He heard a rustle in the bushes and spied an antechinus – bleeding and missing an eye, signs of sex-induced decay – dragging the body of another across the leaf litter and eating it. https://www.watoday.com.au/national/this-aussie-rat-dies-by-sex-now-we-know-it-s-a-cannibal-too-20240119-p5eylt.html

The rats feel comfortable 'belly up' to the beer bars. 🙂 . . . https://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/blog/king-cobra-fact-sheet/

lazarus
Tiger Shark -- the Badass of the Seas 🦈🦈🦈 . . . https://www.instagram.com/danny_mako/?hl=en&g=5 Tiger sharks are returning to the north shore. On this day I was lucky enough to have my buddy @tannerunderwater visiting and he was able to capture the moments of 2 tigers showing up at the dive site on a tour. I don’t pretend that tigers or any sharks are puppy dogs of the oceans. If you look at my work you might be able to tell I honestly enjoy the dark “metal” side of nature. These animals should be respected and I feel in light of the last few attacks that have happened more emphasis should be put on understanding these animals rather than hating them or killing them. “We kill and fear what we don’t understand”. I’ve had sharks test me and chomp when they felt some kind of way about me. I’m not gonna try to be a mind reader and tell you how the shark is feeling, I’m just gonna figure out how to deal with that situation in the safest way possible. In these pictures you are seeing how I try to avoid the shark getting too close to anyone with a gentle push. Just as I would if I was spear fishing and had a stringer of fish and my gun on me. We learn from these experiences and we can pass that information on through media and speaking about it so others can learn as well. A few weeks ago I actually was saved by my buddy Chris whilst spear fishing. I had a shallow water blackout and I felt so embarrassed and upset for putting him in that situation. After thinking about it for a couple weeks I felt like it needed to happen to make me a safer/ better diver who never dives without a partner and never pushes his body when it’s not feeling 100%. For Chris who although has a very traumatic experience has now experienced the worst possible situation and is prepared for it mentally in the future. My point is we sometimes need to put ourselves in these situations in nature so we can adequately learn the true power of nature and respect it. If I never swam with sharks how could I calmly handle one trying to claim my fish one day, or what happens when someone encounters a shark snorkelling the reef. A person who hasn’t experienced a tour here in hawaii or anywhere in the world (with any of the companies) is going to react in a lot better way than someone who hasn’t.

lazarus
Snakes of Pattaya Malayan or Blue Krait (Bungarus candidus). In Thai: งูทับสมิงคลา (ngu thap saming khlaa). Highly venomous. Apart from their triangular body shape, Kraits best can be identified by the scales along their vertebral line are hexagonal, means six-sided, and larger than the other body scales. Malayan kraits are ground-dwelling and generally not aggressive or strongly defensive and if possible will try to hide if harassed. That doesn’t change the fact that it is one of the deadliest snakes in Thailand. They are mainly active at night, which has the effect, that people are usually bitten, when laying down to sleep on the floor. What makes it even more problematic is, that unlike the bite from many venomous snakes, the bite from a Krait is relatively painless. And, symptoms often become present after a significant delay of up to several hours, only. That however does not mean it isn’t doing damage. But it means losing a lot of time for medical care. The venom of Bungarus candidus is neuro-toxic, as is the venomous of the other Kraits, and thus affects the nervous system of the victim. Feed on other snakes, but also on lizards, mice, frogs and other small animals. https://www.facebook.com/groups/snakesofpattaya . . . lazarus
Two male king cobras have entered a residence in Village No. 1, Nam Ron Subdistrict, Kantang District, Trang Province, in the last five days. The most recent entry was on February 12. Its length exceeds 3.5 metres, identical to the one that arrived on February 7. The herpetology team who went to help capture the snake suspected that there were still female king cobras around, which emitted pheromones to attract males to breed. #kingcobra #trang #thailand . . . https://www.facebook.com/KhaosodEnglish
