  1. Have now dropped 33kgs and am at 98kgs. When I was first diagnosed in June my HbA1c reading was 10.3. It is now 5.2. When and if I get down to 90kgs this is when my doctor will start looking at taking me off the medication.

  4. You are not wrong, Butch. The customary estimate is that tourism directly contributes 9% to 12% to Thailand's GDP, with the figure rising to 20% when indirect contributions are calculated. Tourism is important to Thailand not just because of the revenue it generates, but because it creates several million jobs for the country's least skilled workers. In 2019, Thailand had 39.8 million foreign tourists. All those tourists had to be housed, fed, transported and entertained, Thais without much education or occupational training could get jobs as hotel maids, janitors, bellboys, maintenance and kitchen staff, drivers, restaurant wait staff, etc. In addition, ten of thousands of Thais support themselves as street vendors. Tourism is one of the main reasons unemployment is so low in Thailand. The service sector in general and tourism in particular soak up many Thais would would otherwise have a hard time finding a job. Indirectly, many, many businesses in Thailand benefit from tourism. Construction firms, food wholesalers and retailers, auto repair shops, department stores and numerous others supply or service the hotels, restaurants, bars and transport companies that have direct contact with tourists. The indirect effect even filters down to the micro level. To give an example, some of you may recall the beauty shop between the Pattaya Beer Garden and the beer bar complex that fronted on Beach Road. All of that shop's customers were bar girls or freelancers. I doubt a foreign tourist ever set foot there. But without the girls who are dependent on tourists, the shop would have no business at all. That's the indirect effect in a nutshell. The Thai government has definitely NOT given up on tourism. In fact, it's looking to tourism to spearhead the country's economic revival. Take a look at this recent article in the Bangkok Post: Economy shrinks less than expected, 2021 outlook raised as tourism revival eyed. Some excerpts (my highlights): "Thailand's economy contracted less than expected in the third quarter as businesses started a slow recovery from the coronavirus-driven slump in activity, while the reopening of the tourism sector raised hopes of a steady revival. "The government upgraded its economic growth outlook to 1.2% this year, compared with a previous forecast of 0.7%-1.2% expansion, and projected 3.5%-4.5% growth in 2022, thanks to an easing of Covid-19 curbs and a reopening to overseas travellers to reboot its vital tourism industry." ... "The agency (National Economic and Social Development Council) predicted 200,000 foreign tourists this year, compared with 150,000 seen previously, and forecast 5 million visitors next year. There were 40 million foreign tourists in 2019." "'Beyond the fourth quarter, the prospects for the recovery hinge on how quickly the tourism sector recovers,' Capital Economics' Leather said." (EP note: Gareth Leather is senior Asia economist at Capital Economics). Prior to Covid19, the government expected tourism to play an increasingly important role in Thailand's economy: "Thosaporn Sirisamphand, secretary-general of the NESDC, said the government plans for the tourism sector to contribute 30% of the country's GDP by 2030, up from about 20% this year (EP note: 2019). "'Tourism in the very near future will become an even larger component of the economy,' he said. " (Link) If anything, tourism has become more important to the Thai economy than it was before. Evil

  6. Suffering from a hangover... unplanned meet-up with a couple of friends.. one has a TG ( she's widowed and was already over here when they met ) they were in London recently with another couple and the girls wanted to pop off shopping... she said she wanted to buy some "gym shoe" , nothing unusual about that as she keeps fit and goes running .. he handed over his credit card and said I'll treat you , she was very excited and gave him a big hug ... about an hour later the girls came back to the pub , with a bag that had the words Jimmy Choo on it .... 555

  9. I think the date is just a rolling 1 month from today, whatever today might be. I had a similar concern with a mate a couple of days ago, when mine expired on December 15th. I've just checked, and today it expires on December 17th.... I wonder if the thai pass takes this expiry date into account?? Agree though, it would be good if the booster was shown more prominently...., although not until middle of December when I've had mine, please!!

  10. I think the half dose for the booster is if you have a moderna booster.... a full dose has twice the "important stuff" in it, and so only half a dose is needed for the booster. As for the booster showing on the app, I believe it shows in your medical history, but at the moment the app wont show it as part of the passport, where only the initial 2 are shown. I think I heard that they are working on changing the app to show the booster...

  13. We won't get locked down again, certainly not in England, and i doubt anywhere in the UK as Sanuk won't pay furlough again. There's no need, either. If anything with cases running so high for the past few months in the UK, the natural immunity from people who have been infected plus the immunity from vaccines has the UK with a far better immunity than Europe. That, plus in the UK the gap between vaccines has proven to be right, as in Europe the 3 week gap has seen the vaccines wane far quicker. UK has pretty much been validated in their actions. This time last year cases were doubling every 14 days or lessm and needed lockdowns, not so now due the virus hitting the high levels of immunity.

  14. Can see vaccination passports coming in for clubs, gigs, sport etc. If cases get too high. Take that over another lockdown any day. We need to get back to taking precautions ourselves to keep the infections down or we will eventually get locked down again.

  18. Europe turns the screws on the unvaccinated as Covid-19 cases climb And for those who still don't understand why it's come to this. The reason... "It comes as Germany tackles a wave of infections and reflects a growing exasperation across much of the EU at those who continue to refuse a vaccination." The result of those who choose not to get vaccinated and their impact on the healthcare system from their selfishness... "The stretchers at the hospitals on duty are increasing by the dozens, (and) patients are being chosen for intensive care units by priority, based on their ages," Michalis Giannakos, the president of the Public Hospital Workers Federation, told Reuters."

  21. Having got all my new radiators working nicely, I decided to run some cleaner acid through the system again to make sure all of the previously blocked pipes were totally clean. This acid can only be in the system 12 hours max, then has to be totally removed. Having taken an eternity to get all of the air out of the system, I tried to flush each leg through with fresh water instead of draining, then it started to play on my mind that if I didn't get it all out, it may cause a problem whilst I am away in Thailand. Knowing that I should do the job properly, I took the hit and drained the whole system down. It has taken all afternoon to bleed the air out sufficiant enough for all but one radiator to get hot. Now I am hoping the remaining rad will clear over night as I plan to put an inhibitor in tomorrow. Time for my daily walk and I might treat myself to a couple of beers to congratulate myself for not being lazy!

  22. Further to my previous posts on Saturday about my wife's visit to Trinity College Cardiff to take her B1 test and the subsequent email saying they had withheld her result due to being unable to confirm the person taking the test and the person on the Biometric Residence Permit were the same we have now received an update. Thankfully it has now been through their security and they have decided that the female that I escorted with my daughter to Cardiff is indeed my wife, I am very happy with that confirmation, I was getting concerned. The result will now be released within the next 48 hours and we are hopeful this will be confirmed as a positive.

  25. Managed to get the inhibitor into my heating system without dragging any more air in. All the rads are nice and hot, so apart from bleeding any more air out, hopefully the project is finally complete.

  27. I was there 1100 1200 noon. Pretty quiet though not by any means deserted. Photographs probably make it look quieter; I will not take pictures of people going about their everyday shopping and dining. Several shots I had to wait for people to move on but rarely more than a minute or two.

  28. Good to hear their security was able to confirm what you and your wife already knew. I had the thought of what I would do if in a similar situation and figured I'd play their own game against them. Plenty of sites out their now with free online applications, facial recognition being one of them. A quick search led me to this site, so I would have fired up my smarter than me smart phone, accessed the site and let it prove to them software is better at making a facial match than the MK1 eyeball. Tried it out on a photo of friend taken several years apart. In one he's sporting just a mustache, in the other he has a goofy monkey hat on and has a goatee. Software said their was an 80.5% match, which I thought was pretty good considering the differences in photos. I'd expect a higher result using recent photos that are taken for purposes of proof of identity.
