More talks urged on travel bubbles
Slack standards in other countries a risk

PUBLISHED : 19 JUN 2020 AT 04:26

The country is in no rush to open up travel bubbles as more thought is needed into putting the concept into practice, said the head of security for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

The bubbles, where travel is permitted between any two countries where the Covid-19 pandemic has been brought under control, needs more thought before overseas visitors are allowed back in, said Defence Forces chief Pornpipat Benyasri, the top supervisor of CCSA security.

He said issues, which must be addressed before travel bubbles are given a go-ahead without the mandatory 14-day quarantine, include public health regulations and pandemic-related legal requirements of the countries involved.

"There's no rush [to engage in the travel bubbles]. The priority is creating and maintaining health safety," Gen Pornpipat said.

He was referring to Thailand's ability to contain the outbreak as a result of the government's decision to keep borders closed, separating potential Covid-19 carriers from the rest of the population and deploying rigorous quarantine procedures.

A CCSA working group looking into the easing of Covid-19 restrictions is considering the gradual re-opening of borders to foreign visitors.

The group was told some foreign nationals have been granted permission to re-enter Thailand since the end of April. They are business people holding a work permit, teachers and students, skilled workers and technicians repairing machines in large industries.

They were quarantined for 14 days upon arrival in alternative state quarantine facilities for which they paid for out of their own pockets.

The group was also told Thai citizens returning from overseas have also been placed under state quarantine. Several were confirmed to be the source of imported infections.

After the pandemic situation is resolved, overseas tourists will be permitted to return in small groups from countries with travel bubble agreements. They can travel only to select destinations for the sake of effective public health surveillance, a source said.

The CCSA's working group asked the Tourism Authority of Thailand to study the possible downsides of the travel bubbles, including a new wave of Covid-19 triggered by the border reopening and the economic costs which the government must foot if the outbreak recurs.

The working group also voiced caution over "delicate" issues such as travel bubble partner countries negotiating compromises on travel conditions which increases the risk of a new outbreak. Also, local communities might resist the reopening under travel bubble agreements of some tourist destinations located close to them.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health Service Support said medical tourism could be incorporated in the terms of bubble arrangements. Medical tourism was good for the economy though details should be spelt out in travel bubble agreements, said Tharet Krassanairawiwong, of the department.

The UK will have them soon, pretty much said that earlier, by end of the month. But I don't think Thailand will currently agree to one with the UK

Really hoping so, going to book 10 days in Corralejo from 26th August.

Think you'll be fine Gazza.

Hoping to get to Turkey end of August, start of September. A lot more confident after what I heard today.

Though as said, doubt Thailand will currently agree to one with the UK.

Spain has just unilaterally lifted the 14 day quarantine requirement for UK nationals. I suspect the UK will reciprocate that within the next week or so.

Hoping they do this for Germany as well. The Germans are letting us in and I want to go there in 10 days time but won't if the UK quarantine laws are still around.

ATM, don't the UK quarantine laws also apply to anyone returning from Spain?

Yes Basil at the moment. The UK government is to make an announcement on 29th June, if you believe everything written they will be reciprocating this quarantine free arrangement with Spain creating an air corridor.Talks are ongoing with Portugal and Italy as well. I have booked flights from Bristol to Fuerteventura departing 26th August staying at an Airbnb right on the seafront at Corralejo. https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/12460754?source_impression_id=p3_1592732066_6RPjL88arH7WuVQn&guests=1&adults=1

My daughters have rearranged KLM flights booked also on the 26th August but to visit me here in Thailand.

I do not see that actually taking place however we are hoping for the best.

They can rearrange again without charge but the 6th September is the last possible date for them to travel, stay 10 nights, and get back in time for my Grandaughter to start Uni.

They do but the point was that with Spain, Germany etc already allowing UK citizens in without quarantine it is hoped that the UK withdraws the need for quarantine for those same countries, I believe the earliest this will be done is at the meeting on 29 June where a decision  will be made. It is expected that the right decision will be made but when will it put an end to the quarantine rule.

I am hoping it will be 01 July but some think 04 July. I also believe that even though I may travel out before the rule changes then on landing back after quarantine has been lifted I can just go about my business as normal.;  the quarantine law is only for those coming into the country.

From what I've been reading the UK quarantine laws aren't worth the paper they are written on. Most people are walking through the airports unchecked.

Well they are meant to be filling in forms prior to going through immigration so there should be checks.  It would appear as long as arriving passengers fill in the forms then they certainly could look like they are walking through airports unchecked. The issue really isn't about the airport but what they do when they are in the comfort of their own houses.

I'm booked to go to Spain at the beginning of September. I'll be going regardless of the ridiculous quarantine rules. The police haven't got the numbers to enforce it anyhow, it's a complete farce.

I don't think the quarantine laws will be in effect then, I doubt they will be in effect even in July, you are pretty safe.

Where you thinking of going in Germany? I was thinking of popping over to Munich.

Berlin was my first choice, haven't even looked at Munich. I get a business class firm booking which must be used by 08 July so I looked at flights to Spain, Gibraltar, Lisbon but thought of Berlin as it is 35 years since I was last there, hotel prices quite cheap as well.

Just going to go for a couple of days possibly the 2-4th or 3-5th July.

When were you going?

.

Thailand will currently no way agree to a 'corridor' with the UK anyway, so all the above is irrelevant to this thread :default_ball:

Yes, most of the posts should have been in the Non Thailand Covid thread including mine, oops....

Basically around the same dates. Maybe slightly earlier, but I would be going for 1 week though.

Just want to use my free ticket and can only go for a few days as hoping Boris allows me to take my family to Devon for a few days over my birthday on the 9th.

I will make a decision when Boris makes up his mind about air corridors and when they will begin.
