Does Beach Road still flood if there is a very heavy thunderstorm or is that cured now?

Yes it still floods, but with the pumps they have in place and the larger drains underground the flood waters recede faster than before.

Pattaya City has started the renovation of North Pattaya to South Pattaya Beach at a distance of 2.7 kilometers.

Mr. Kietisak Siwongchai, the Pattaya City Deputy Administrative Chief Officer, told The Pattaya News, “We have hired the Nong Nooch Landscape & Garden Design Co., Ltd. to renovate the beach since August 6th of this year which is expected to be finished in November 2023 (Yes, over two years). The total budget is set at 116,100,000 baht.”

“This long-term project is designed to refresh and recover the beach and beach walkway area and make it welcoming again once tourists return, which we expect to see widescale tourism next year. We have to quickly develop tourism places and prepare to welcome tourists. Facilities near the beach will have to be all renovated. ” Kietisak explained.

This ambitious plan includes underground bathrooms, exercise areas, plenty of seating spots and shade/trees, repaired sidewalks, plenty of shrubbery and plants, a children’s playground, better lighting, more space for parking, room for food cart vendors, handicap spaces and access, and much more. The project was originally planned to start last year but was delayed, according to officials because of Covid-19.

Those guys from Nong Nooch have done some pretty good work at Nong Nooch, so that is a positive. But underground bathrooms near Beach Road? Won't those flood with every rain?

Agree Nong Nooch does some nice looking landscaping. As for underground bathrooms, they'll have to build the entrances high enough to avoid the worst of the flooding. Think steps up before going down.

A bigger problem I foresee with underground bathrooms, or any public bathrooms for that matter is keeping them clean. They'll probably reek of piss and shit within a few months of being built.

Hate to be cynical, but 2023? Even for Thailand standards, that seems like an incredibly long time for a project like this.

More room for food cart vendors? How about more room for "freelancers" ?  Like all girls 50 and over, have to be here, the others somewhere else? LOL!

Maybe that's how it is planned. The bathrooms will only function after the rains 🙃

https://www.pattayamail.com/news/downsized-pattaya-beach-facelift-begins-will-take-2-years-368002

"In addition to re-landscaping the beach itself, the project includes yet another widening of Beach Road, adding another traffic lane and 700 parking spaces.

The vital north-south artery, which only was fully patched up earlier this year after an agonizingly long bout of road construction, will be ripped up once again to widen it by three meters, taking that space from the footpath.

The extra lane will allow for creation of 700 parking spaces along the 2.7-kilometer stretch between the Dusit Curve and Walking Street."

I don't like the sound of that. We can but hope that, if they are creating parking lanes, the tour buses etc. won't be permitted to park in a way that obstructs the other traffic.

Didn't they (Mayor) intend to make Pattaya as great as the major European tourist sites? I guess they want to copy the promenade des anglais of Nice.

Brick laying and palm trees will be easy, the clean blue water as good as impossible.

The water isn’t that colour in Nice, was there a couple of years ago.

Latest news is the work on the beach has been suspended due to encroachment issues. Puts into doubt the Mayor's earlier assertion this was part of a multi-phase project. If it was you would expect the minor detail of encroachment would have been worked out.

New recreation areas 'encroaching' on recently rebuilt Pattaya Beach

The Marine Department has ordered Pattaya City to halt the building of recreational areas on the ocean side of the footpath along Beach Road because it may be in in breach of the law, a department official said.

Ekarat Kantharo, director of the Regional Marine Office in Pattaya, said the work could be construed as illegal encroachment on the newly renovated beach and this needed to be sorted out.

Now I understand why the beach is disappearing, it isn't the sand that is flushed away but Beach Road which is encroaching more and more on the beach 😉data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAPABAP///wAAACH5BAEKAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAICRAEAOw==
