I couldn't sleep so I can imagine what seeing the film as a child must've been like. 1
Stillearly Posted October 19, 2023 Author Posted October 19, 2023 I think as a child growing up in the 70's the scariest things were the public information films .... always on TV , kids dying in fridges , electrocuted whilst fishing , drowning in ponds or silage .. run over by cars , tractors and trains ... but the most frightening to me were the "protect and survive" nuclear adverts and the rabies adverts.. I still hate needles now and I'm sure it was down to that film .. 1
boydeste Posted October 19, 2023 Posted October 19, 2023 I am not a fan of Horror/scary movies, so have never really watched them. Watching the arm scene in Jaws was enough for me to jump out of my seat LOL. Even the music in Dr Who used to scare me as a kid and would also hide behind the sofa whilst watching. 1
Horizondave Posted October 19, 2023 Posted October 19, 2023 I can't remember the exact age I saw the film but, Captain Clegg, released in 1962, scared the crap out of me as a young boy. The story was just spooky and the main scary moment for me, was a horseman in a skeleton outfit riding through the dark marshes. It was a Hammer movie, hence my love for all Hammer movies. 1

Only went to see it , as there was protesters outside the cinema trying to stop us going in, around the same time my friends and I had started reading Dennis Wheatley they have just released another version, I’ll give it a miss
forcebwithu Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 When I saw the topic title, the Twilight Zone immediately came to mind. Some of the episodes gave me nightmares after watching them as a kid. The 25 Creepiest 'Twilight Zone' Episodes 1
forcebwithu Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 The final scene in Carrie scared the bejesus out of me.

fygjam Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 The 1959 version. It wasn't so much the movie as the walking home in the dark afterwards.

Toy Boy Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 My family used to watch 'The Avengers' together, the original version with Patrick McNee and Diana Rigg. One episode that scared the crap out of me (I was only around 7 years old at the time) was 'The Man-Eater of Surrey Green'. My goodness, but that was scary at the time... https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0516863/ 1

Unfortunately that means Full Corporal not what you may be thinking !! 4 hours ago, fygjam said: It wasn't so much the movie as the walking home in the dark afterwards. As a choir boy in a small Dorset village I hated walking home alone in the dark after Sunday night Evensong... So many bats dipping down to "attack" me !! Interestingly, I think today's children of the same age would be more frightened of the Maths on the blackboard ..... (non white multi-ethnic non gender specific display of toxic masculinity mind control device)..... than they would be of 1960s cinematography 2 1
Golfingboy Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 This one 100% for me.....must have been until well into my 20's that Mrs Voorhees didn't scare me anymore 2

I watched "American Werewolf in London" at the cinema when I was about 14 or 15 and then cycled home afterwards....with only a dynamo to light my way ... I think it was the first time I didn't stop on any of the hills ... 🌕🐺 3

Aqualung Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 As @Stillearly posted, that childcatcher fella from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang scared the shit out of me as a kid. I was a quite a bit older when I first watched the original Excorcist movie. It disturbed me to be honest but whenever the chance arises I still watch it as its a classic. Going back to 69 - 73, one series really did spook me as kid. It was prime time viewing around 6 pm on a Sunday. Doubt any UK bms remember but the series was called the "Flaxton Boys". I found some of the stories scary to say the least. Filmed on location up at Ripley castle near Harrogate. A young actor who later played the lead role in another classic "Kes" was in series 2 I think. David Bradley. I hindsight, knowing what we know now, "Jim, ll fix it" would be the number one scare fest. Along with Rolf Harris' show. 1

As I kid I used to dote on the "Tales of the Unexpected" but my favourite was always the Hammer Horror series. Loved Peter Cushing and Vincent Price. 2
