Decided to walk to town centre and back (7 miles) to visit Nationwide Building society. In there all of 4 minutes and no queue. I was tempted to take the bus back home but relied on a little discipline. Having a nice hot cup of fresh coffee and Margareta thin crust pizza now as my reward.5 points

I always wonder why the People expect Politicians to be "Leaders", to be "Decisive", to have a "Plan", and to react "Quickly", to any crisis. Politicians (ALL Politicians), are good at one thing, POLITICS! By its very nature, Politics requires compromise, co-operation, dis-information, deception, and delayed decisions. None of these things have any use in a Crisis. Don't get me wrong, I understand the need for all of the above, I just don't get why the ranter expects this particular Politician to actually be a LEADER during this or any other crisis. I understand he is frustrated as are we all, but the long road out of this Crisis and the next one is to vote in People who were proven Leaders (Military, Corporate, Etc.) before they became politicians. That doesn't work all the time, but it's a lot better than the career politician.4 points

My apology. I should not have quoted your post when making my observation as I never thought for one moment that you were being serious. đŦ This topic has been far too close to home for me as I WAS once an athlete and longtime footballer and now some mornings it is as much as I can do to get out of bed thanks to dodgy knees and lower back pain. AIl of those problems I make far worse by being overweight. If I was a horse they would have shot me by now. âšī¸ On the good side my only redeeming factors are that I have never smoked and my alcohol consumption is very occasional and never at home. I cling to those like a drowning man and a lifebelt. On the bad side I was overweight before Covid and have added greatly in the last 9 months and I know I do not exercise enough. I suddenly feel like an accident waiting to happen and the remedy is in my hands and nobody else. I know exactly what excercises to do I just need the discipline to do them. No more crap comfort food. Starting Sunday a strict low carbohydrate diet verging on the no carbohydrates for the first month. I can be very stubborn and this is one time it can be a virtue.4 points

I have got into a bad routine where I sleep too long in the mornings and then am not tired at night so stay up longer. It was mid day before I got up today, so have to break the routine. Not easy to do as I like my sleep. Because I am loosing out on the morning time I am getting more and more lazy. Going to set my alarm for 9am tomorrow and try to break the cycle. When I am allowed to go fishing, there is an incentive to get motivated, but it's been getting more and more difficult with these extended lockdowns.3 points

When I read about this sort of annual regulatory tyranny it reminds me of how easy it is to own and operate a vehicle in my neck of the woods, with our private insurance. I bought a used pickup just before Xmas and received a bill of sale from the dealership where I purchased it. In pre-covid times I would then have gone to my insurance agency and taken care of the insurance, then off to our gov't Motor Vehicles dept. to obtain my registration. Now I do all of the insurance stuff online - I send my agent the scanned bill of sale and she sends me the change form for my policy as I am adding this vehicle to an existing policy with others. I sign it electronically and return it, and she then sends me the "pink card" which is proof of insurance to be carried in the vehicle. This particular insurance company doesn't require a mechanical inspection unless the vehicle is at least 15 years old so I am okay with this new unit, being a 2007. I print out the pink card and then it is off to Motor Vehicles with a registration slip from a vehicle I sold previously; I show them this and the license plate it pertains to, my bill of sale and my insurance card, pay the grand sum of $1 for the registration change and I am out of the door within 15 minutes of arriving there, good to go. Now if I lived in British Columbia, our neighbouring province to the south, it would be a totally different story with their province-run insurance and registration - I would not be able to even afford to own the fleet of several vehicles that I now have. I think they have yearly inspections there too, and I know that even if you brought a brand new vehicle over from Alberta, for instance, you would still have to have it inspected before being able to buy insurance and registration for it in BC. Unfortunately, our jurisdiction tends to follow BC's lead in many other legal and governmental matters so it's probably only a matter of time before we are forced into yearly inspections here too - after all, gov'ts can get away with just about anything these days if they can claim it's for "safety", but I'll certainly enjoy things the way they are in the meantime.2 points

For those with kids in the U.K. https://www.bbc.com/mediacentre/2020/bbc-launches-biggest-education-offer-ever The BBC is to deliver the biggest education offer in its history across more of its platforms. It will bring together BBC Two, CBBC, BBC Red Button, BBC iPlayer and online to deliver a new education offer to children, teachers and parents as a third national lockdown begins. Reacting quickly to the news of UK schools moving to remote learning, the new offer from the BBC will ensure all children can access curriculum-based learning, even if they donât have access to the internet. Starting on Monday 11 January, each week day on CBBC will see a three-hour block of primary school programming from 9am, including BBC Live Lessons and BBC Bitesize Daily, as well as other educational programming such as Our School and Celebrity Supply Teacher and much loved titles such as Horrible Histories, Art Ninja and Operation Ouch. BBC Two will cater for secondary students with programming to support the GCSE curriculum, with a least two hours of content each weekday. Content will be built around Bitesize Daily secondary shows, complemented by Shakespeare and classic drama adaptations alongside science, history and factual titles from the BBCâs award-winning factual programming units. Bitesize Daily primary and secondary will also air every day on BBC Red Button as well as episodes being available on demand on BBC iPlayer.2 points

I was listening to an interview with a top UCSF doc yesterday on NPR. She said there is a need to be more strategic with how the gov't addresses the Covid epidemic. Some communities are being "hit" a lot harder than others. There is a lack of comprehensive data. Seems the gov't has been playing catch up for almost a year now. Multiple generations living under the same roof is a "red flag." Glad you & your lovely Mrs. are "clean." đ2 points

I already wished you well for getting over the flu which can be a real bastard. đ I had forgot that you had Covid. You must have been one of the first. So that makes you the only expat I personally now know who has had Covid but I imagine there must be others. I ask my question again. Does anybody know of any expats who have contracted Covid in the last 6 weeks?1 point

alongside covid, there is a flu virus, nasty one. I am just about getting thru it. hot/cold sweat with no actual fever, and the usual shit. saw my Dr. who reminded me I had already had covid in january, and put me on the right track. the worying thing is tha in the back of your mind you think you might have covid. but he reckons the flu is affecting more people than the C.1 point

Interesting article, Rachanee and I have been tested 4 times now through "Project Baseline" here in Santa Clara County. Last test was Nov 16th, signed up through their web-site like the last 3 times, appt was 3 days later at the Fairgrounds and the drive through. nasal swab up the nose, put it in the container, hand it back to the Nurse and 2 days later we both get an e-mail.1 point
-
Good point. Most of the general public testing stations where I live are drive through. You make an appointment online, show up, open your car window, get nasal swabbed, and they send you the result via text or e-mail. They've had issues though with low risk people taking many of the appointment slots to the detriment of high risk or ill folks.1 point

Your possible trip and my daughters trip over (flights already changed three times) in 2021 are only partially dependant upon the UK completing a significant vaccination program. Maybe the biggest stumbling block will be that Thailand are not going to open up to unrestricted mass tourism until they have completed a similar significant vaccination program on the Thai population. I read somewhere that Thailand has an advance order enough for 2 million vaccinations maybe arriving end of February? March? June?1 point

It was probably that I was on a road heading for a very popular tourist spot, I tried to explain that I was heading home on a longer scenic route but was turned around after a nice chat. I do appreciate the job they have been tasked with, I am sure they would rather be doing other, more important, duties.1 point
