Hallowee night all prepared.

I've got a bucket of water sitting on my balcony. Anyone comes trick or treating to my place will be greeted by a naked fat man throwing water over them.

Where will you find a “naked fat man”?
Or do you have one in your room already and is he up for throwing water over little children?
Forgot that question, we don’t need to know what you get up to in the privacy of your own home, just don’t frighten the kids. 😉

I came back from my week fishing in France to give my boiler a test since adjusting the pressure switch. My suspicion was it may still be problematic in cold temperatures .

My suspicion was correct and it struggled to fire up at 15 degrees, so little or no chance at 8 degrees that I set it at whilst away for the winter.

Yesterday I managed to chop out the old switch and fit the new one. It's now firing up as it should, but the igniter doesn't always spark properly. I only noticed this because of watching it so much. I worked it out that the boiler must be 18, possibly 20 years old and I had already decided to get a new one fitted next summer when the demand on engineers is low and prices accordingly. If I fit a new igniter, what is next?

A friend of a mate of mine has just had a new boiler of similar type fitted from a local guy and fully recommended him and the cost was fair and not inflated for the winter rush. He came and looked at the job last night and agreed a price to fit me a new one with a 10 year manufacturers guarantee at a very fair price and more importantly he can do it Monday and it's an easy swop out that should be done in a day.

Given my Winter trip is rapidly approaching, I am delighted to get this sorted and hopefully it all goes well with no further problems. The last thing I need is for my heating to be playing up causing me to have to return home early or not go at all.

Although my boiler is old and according to most gas fitters "shit", it's been pretty good apart from needing one £350 PCB replaced. My biggest nightmare is the 2 port Danfoss Zone valve actuator which seems to enjoy playing up. They're a bitch to wire in as well, I did one about 9 years ago, and the replacement valve started to leak , so I just said sod it and got a plumber to fit a new valve and actuator, total cost inc fitting, £140. (£85 for the actuator plus fitting).

I fully intend to replace my boiler over the next few years ahead of the ban.

It's always the same, things get old and start to fail, you start spending money on repairs, then before you know it, you resent buying a new one because you have spent so much money on it.

A fine line really.

My boiler at the moment is an "ideal" (my other boiler is nearly 50 and from the Philippines...that does need replacing but is too expensive 🤣)

I've had a couple of Gas Fitters say that a Glowworm or Worcester are both an easy swap and they're a decent brand. I also have a tank system, (Megaflow) so I'll get a system boiler rather than a combi. I'm edging towards a Worcester tbh.

As you say, a fine line and If it packs up, I'll bite the bullet and just go for a replacement rather than a repair. Makes sense in the long run.

I bled all my radiators a couple of days ago. Makes a difference after not having the heating on for several months. One of them spat at me for some unknown reason. Air locks can a problem. Fortunately my Vallant combi boiler is just under 4 years old. No problems yet.

It's horrible coming back from a warm climate to the cold whether and getting dark at 5pm.

Are you on about the Radiators in the Gentlemen's Toilets on Hampstead Heath, or the ones at your home?.

welcome back to dark evenings, rain and cold winds mate. Never been a better excuse NOT to return from Thailand!.

Sitting indoors waiting for all the kids to come around, bang the door and annoy me. I do have sweeties though to get them on their way pretty sharpish.

Wife out with my little trouble maker and her mates banging on doors. The 6 of them will be back soon, I can then take two of them home and go passed the supermarket to get some beers.

2 girls doing a sleepover with Kataleya but Porn is in charge of them thankfully.

I can’t believe it’s been 7 years since we had the house refurbished and extended and a new plumbing system including a new boiler and rads fitted, before we moved in. 😳
The plumber who did the work is bloody great and he’s done many installations for me and my sister since.
He fitted an “Ideal” Combi boiler and has serviced it each year since and it’s working perfectly. I asked him at the last service, when does the 7 year guarantee end and he said I’m the agent for them in this area “so don’t worry because I didn’t fill out your installation date for your boiler so the guarantee could end 3 years after the 7 years, so if anything expensive goes pop ill fit a new part under the guarantee”.
Fair enough I thought. 🤗

He’s coming next week to move my water meter and rang to say he’ll service the boiler at the same time. When he’s serviced it in the past he really does a thorough job, stripping most of the boiler down into various parts for cleaning, checking for leaks with that blue water and checking for pressure drop in the gas meter and always adding a bottle of radiator descaling agent.
Usually takes 1.5 hours and I pay him £45 cash. Always best to choose a local tradesman and he is really local to me, as he lives 300mt away. I must have recommended him to 25 people+ over the years, so he’s benefited from doing good work for me at a decent price.
Not needed to use the CH yet, but like most sensible people, i’ll run it for a couple of hours after the service to ensure it’s ready for winter. Won’t need to bleed radiators, as he’ll do that at the service  👍

My currently have a Baxi 3 solo 60 system boiler, it is being replaced with an Ideal Logic Max System which has a 10 year manufacturers warranty. The engineer recommended it to me. Only difference seems to be the modern systems recycle the flu heat and a condensation pipe needs to be fitted for a drain. Apparently this makes them so much more efficient and should reduce my gas usage significantly.

Do modern ones come with control via the internet/with an app?  I got a Worcester combi about 5 years back and retrofitted a controller for remote operation.  It's great for getting the place warm when you're returning from a trip or even just optimising settings when day to day plans change.

You can fit a smart thermostat to pretty much any boiler these days to do just that.
