  2. The weather was great here this week, so I started prepping yesterday to grill today. I use the extruded coconut briquets (pillow type) which burn a ridiculously long time, so when I fire up the grill I do enough for several days for us. Today's mix was hot dogs, bratwurst, parmesan/paprika potato wedges, and marinated pork loin.

  6. I would'nt touch the Sinovac vaccine with a barge pole irrespective of the cost. My plan is to get the Astrazeneca as soon as it is available in Thailand and i'll just pay.

  7. Absolutely, around 10 years ago I had to take my mum,who is 91 now,to A & E with a broken wrist. The doc asked her how she did it.I was pulling a tree up & slipped she said. "YOU were pulling a tree up?" said the doc increduously.

  10. more hoops to jump around... COVID-19 TEST WILL BE MANDATORY FOR ALL VISA EXTENSIONS https://www.khaosodenglish.com/news/crimecourtscalamity/2021/01/19/covid-19-test-result-will-be-mandatory-for-all-visa-extensions/ BANGKOK — A test for COVID-19 will soon be required for every foreigner who wishes to extend their stay in the kingdom, the immigration police said Monday. Bureau spokesman Archayon Kraithong said the new measure will make it mandatory for foreigners to obtain a proof of negative coronavirus test before visiting the immigration to extend their visa. He said the stringent rule will apply to every type of visa, regardless of how long the foreigner has stayed in the country. “It will become effective after Jan. 24,” Maj. Gen. Archayon said by phone. “This is in accordance with the new ministerial regulation and will apply to all types of visa.”... ...The new rule will likely place further financial burden on expats residing in Thailand. A coronavirus test at the government-run Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute costs about 3,000 baht, but the price can go to 6,000 baht and even 8,000 baht at some hospitals...

  11. Whipped up an easy spinach/greens salad and semi homemade sauce. Lately what I will do is get a jar of decent sauce. Then I buy a thing of ground pork, chop up a ton of fresh garlic and onion. Cook that and then add it to the sauce. Let it simmer for a few, and while waiting for that prep the salad and cook the pasta. Twenty minutes later ---- wha la a pretty good tasting, healthy little meal.

  13. Reading some articles that the Israelis are saying that the majority of those who have had the Pfizer vaccine are not passing on the virus. It appears that the vaccine dosage creates such a high immunity that even if infected with the virus it can not hang around long enough to infect any others due to the immune system working to completely suppress the virus. The vaccine dosage also increases the immune system 100s of times more than the immune system alone.

  16. Well I have just done my third PCR test in ten days. One in Dubai before flying to Kuwait. One at Kuwait airport upon arrival. One today at a government hospital. Both tests in Kuwait are free of charge, the one in Dubai cost me $32 Only now are the UK implementing the requirement of negative PCR test before travel to the UK. No wonder the UK now has the worlds highest daily death rate.

  20. I’m agreeing with you re transmission. I just think that some countries will have something to say about travellers coming to holiday in their countries if they aren’t on top of their own vaccine programmes. Also think there is a good chance they will ask for negative tests before travel. Given we are doing way better that most in vaccine rollout some countries may not be on top of their vaccine programmes before the summer.

  23. EU is considering 'vaccine passports' under pressure from countries like Portugal and Greece that depend on tourism. I think it's a good idea. Absolutely no reason why someone who has been vaccinated should be prohibited from travelling.

  24. If I don't get it under the government scheme, which I think I should as I pay social security, and if my company doesn't provide the vaccine to us expats as a common courtesy, I'll buy it myself after the effectiveness has been properly substantiated.

  25. Reports that one hospital group has ordered many doses of vaccine for its own use on staff, and also for sale, but it's the Sinovac version. Charging 3,200 Baht for something that costs $5, sigh. Better to wait until the AstraZeneca vaccine is available. You might be able to get the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, but I wouldn't trust the Thais to have stored them properly.

  34. huh...? Covid-19 tests are not required for visa extensions – Phuket Immigration https://thethaiger.com/news/national/covid-19-tests-are-not-required-for-visa-extensions-phuket-immigration?fbclid=IwAR2fcuS-L1iJzZ-eVWvQo2cX05BCeThxSHO5EuZr44IAQTi2SxYpY3S4VJM No… you don’t need a Covid-19 test to extend your visa or apply for a work permit, according to Phuket Immigration. While multiple Covid-19 tests are required for people arriving in Thailand and undergoing quarantine, foreigners who have been in the country do not need to be tested. The local immigration deputy chief Nareuwat Putthawiro spoke with Phuket News, debunking some rumours that were shared on social media saying Covid-19 tests could soon be required when extending visas or applying for work permits. “We do not require any medical documents for an application to renew a visa, because there are few foreigners’ movements outside Phuket. Most of them live and work in Phuket, and have done so before the new wave of Covid-19… So they do not have to worry about it. Everything is still the same.”...

  35. We really are spoilt in the UK Coxy with the price of a reasonable wine/rose. I used to consume a few bottles a week of my favourite Rose Sutter Home, i could buy it at Asda for 4 GBP a bottle, that was back in 2006 so no doubt its gone up in price. I just refuse to pay the heavily taxed prices here in Thailand, i have plenty of alternative things i like to drink.

  40. The best one of the 25% off 6 bottles or more is Sainsburys in my experience. They have a lot of wines already on offer & you get the 25% off of the discounted price. You can get some really nice £9-£10 wines for around £6.I usually get 18 bottles when this offer is on & then go back for more of the ones I really like(like Oyster Bay Merlot from the last offer,I bought 18 of that alone). I suppose I'm an old wino.....🥳

  41. Udon too far away from beach. HH the Kings "summer residence" kind of a low key place, and I think will remain that way (regarding minimal naughty stuff). I'm back and forth on my thoughts regarding Pattaya, in respect to what may happen in the future. I commented on my previous post how I don't really see it becoming a huge "family destination". Nothing has changed regarding those thoughts since. But.... I do have to say when covid first hit (and I witnessed the entire lockdown first hand) my initial gut reaction and thoughts were - Now they (the anti-naughty groups) who have been outspoken against "nightlife zones" will have the political pull and public support they need to get their agenda through. That being a broad rejection of the beer bars, go-go's, etc. Now.... as time went on and I branched out more throughout the town and viewed the carnage, the vast empty rooms, the empty baht buses, the lines of people waiting for food. My initial thoughts began to shift. I began to weigh the chance that many of the folks who previously would have been strong advocates of bouncing the naughty scene out might be reconsidering. The reason why is perhaps they would see how economically devastating the loss of the market was having a huge negative impact on not only businesses, but on individuals who really had/have no other means of support (not to mention huge loss of tax revenue). The longer the shut down dragged on the more I began to see things in this respect. So..... what am I trying to say here ? I don't think my initial thoughts of covid will be the final dagger in the heart of the monger scene will actually happen. Yet, I certainly don't see the investments pouring in to realistically transform the place into some family destination (that's for damn sure). What I think now we will see at some point .... Slow return to what we were seeing before covid. Slow gradual shifting, continuation of the monger scene along with Indian small business investments. But we will see many vacant bars and shops for a long time. Those that are able to weather the storm and keep their places in good shape may survive and actually prosper. It will be a long time coming for big changes. Some will end up doing well, but they have to be able to wait it out, not just in the short term, but long term.

  42. I too think that this is a distinct possibility - seems to me that gambling/casinos aren't allowed in Thailand because the old king didn't like them but I think the new king may have different opinions and with the money to be made from large-scale casino development, who knows? Apparently, quiet preparations have been/are being made to accommodate this - for example, over the last two or three trips I spent some time staying at the March Hotel, situated on Pattaya Klang 16 - I liked it for its newness, good pricing and quiet location although on the last visit there was a marked increase in bus tours arriving there. Anyway, I mentioned to an expat friend in the neighbourhood one day how big the lobby in this hotel is - it basically covers the entire first floor of the hotel and there is nothing else on that floor but the reception area - and he told me that the hotel had been built by the Chinese and had been totally wired on that ground floor for casino machines! Maybe it was just a rumour that he had heard elsewhere but you have to admit that it is certainly feasible - why wouldn't they plan for a future that is entirely possible?

  43. Excellent summary of things..... Another thing I have been watching for years is Gambling/ Casinos.......I think there is a movement underway to take-out the underground casinos in Thailand and give that income to the big boys...I don't think morality has any thing to do with the recent crackdowns... I hate to say it but Pattaya is ripe for a Sihanoukville part 2 with all these empty condos and almost empty shopping malls.......It would not take much to get another Sihanoukville disaster going in Pattaya.... China just needs to open the floodgates on easy cheap flights after gambling is legalized and the old Pattaya will be just a memory.....
