Golfingboy
Probably only the guys who have lifted fairly seriously, will have heard of this man. Louis Simmons, controversial powerlifter and trainer, and owner of the invitation-only Westside Barbell gym, passed at 74. Considering how hard he pushed his whole life, and his unapologetic use and advocacy of steroids, I’d say he lived a good life…..

Fucking sad though, great musician and another great talent lost.☹️ Unfortunately, being extremely talented in the 'entertainment industry', often means mentally flawed and susceptible to the attractions of drugs. Common story that goes back a long long time. People like Dave Grohl who seems very capable of keeping things together, are the exception not the rule with those people. It also seems to me that someone who does 'indulge' in such activities, should never spend too much time in 3rd world countries once they pass 50. There have been many examples of Aussies who have had heart attacks and other medical problems in Australia, where they were resuscitated and taken to the Hospital alive and either survived (Kerri Packer) or died a long time later (Marshy). Whereas, many like Warney and now Taylor never seem to get out of the room alive. Makes sense to go back home when you start to have serious medical issues - lets face it - Somchai and Pornalong dont get the training or have the equipment of real Paramedics. 2

Luckily for him, the Ambulance that got there had the right gear to resuscitate him and keep him alive until they got him into hospital - he lived for many years afterwards. When he found out later that only 1 in 10 Ambulances actually had that gear and he was very lucky that it was in the one nearest him at the time, he donated $millions so that the gear was in every Ambulance in the State (he was uber rich if you didnt know). There is very very few Ambulances and Paramedics like that in 3rd world countries - if any for most. 1

Yeh - I got a mate who lives in the 'middle of nowhere' - miles from any City. He built a mansion in his wife's village - so he is a bit 'stuck' - he could never get back what it cost him to build - everything around him is wood and tin roofs. But he and his wife are very happy and that is what counts. I do worry though, that if he has a sudden and serious medical problem he will be several hours away from quality medical services.

The office did not rule on the cause of death, and said that investigation is ongoing and results will be released after they are obtained. 1

Also part of the reason we built our house in Manila where we did, close enough to get to a Hospital in case of an emergency. Wife being so long in the medical field helps somewhat as well, at least from the whole "Do the CPR thing" properly. Might also be a case of trying to stay reasonably healthy as the years roll on as well. 1

Being near quality health care providers (well trained physicians, hospitals, recovery and long term care providers) is something often overlooked by retirees who are looking to relocate. Back in the late 70's when my father had retired my parents were looking at a wonderful place in the Smokies (Western North Carolina). Very beautiful, yet very rural. They eventually ended up in a very nice area near Chapel Hill (UNC and many other well known medical facilities and providers). They made a very good decision in factoring this in, as it probably added years to what turned out to be a very happy and comfortable retirement. I certainly made note of this (along with many other wise decisions they made throughout the years).
