COVID 19 GLOBAL

Have to disagree with you there to a certain extent.

Yes strains mutate all the time but vaccines need to change considerably to combat those mutations.

Each year the vaccine for influenza is based on the expected strains being apparent that particular year,  predicted by those "experts", but often times they're completely wrong and your flu jab does fcuk all for that years strain(s).

I think its safe to say their guess is only slightly better than ours mate.

I assume their guess is based on their expertise in the fields they work in but, yes, this is a new virus that has a lot of unknowns.

All of the viruses over time have had a vaccine that had to be devised/created to start to erase the associated pandemic; happened with polio, diphtheria, measles and mumps etc.  Of course with time the vaccines will need to be adapted to new mutations but for most of those affected or getting Covid 19 the new vaccines should work and the scientists seem relatively confident the vaccine will still offer good protection for any mutated virus.

Of course we are in unchartered times so only time will tell how effective these vaccines will be.

Greenwich Council have just been ordered by the Government to keep their schools open or face prosecution, so they’ve agreed to keep schools open.

My sons school in Dorset has been plagued by teachers and children being sent home to isolate for 14 days, either because the teachers have contracted Covid, or have come into contact with someone who has developed it.

The school Head teacher and her staff that are left there, have done well in keeping it open for so long.
Having our son home is no bother, as we are both home all day, or can be, but I feel for single parents who will have no choice but to stay home and that may well cost them their jobs.

Now we are being told about this “Super Virus” so named by many newspapers or “Super Spreader” as named by the Health Minister😉 that’s appeared in the South East.

Professor Jonathan Ball, a Virologist from Nottingham University said that “he and his colleagues are scratching their heads as to why the Health Secretary said what he said about this Virus variation in Parliament, especially, as yet, there was very little evidence that this was a variation that couldn’t be dealt with by the vaccine’s”.

I thought it was said in the context that the new strain might be a lot more contagious, which possibly explains the recent big spike in cases,

“Might be more contagious” is the contentious issue, until more research has been done.

As to recent “spikes” could that not be attributed in part, to people not socially distancing or wearing masks over the last couple of months, despite numerous warnings to do so.
We’ll have to wait and see what happens to this new virus when it’s confronted by people who have been vaccinated.  🤔

From what I have observed, that is very likely. Many people just aren't taking it seriously any more, and have dropped their guard. Others seem to belong to groups who rebel against doing anything society asks of them.

Wales is in a bloody right mess

You are right, the county where I live is probably the second highest in the country for covid infection (per 100,000) and the winner is only 30 minutes down the road in Merthyr Tydfil.

People do not wear masks here as normal, they never did.  Even back in July when I came to Wales looking to move into the area nobody was obliged to wear a mask, not even in supermarkets.  People just go about their business as if it is normal. I was the only one wearing a mask and even going into a chip shop none of the staff wore protective gear.

The number of times the headmistress has written to parents to wear masks when dropping off/picking up children is many and yet every time I picked up my daughter the usual suspects were nattering 4 or 5 in a group mask-less.  Even my neighbour admits to visiting friends when nobody is meant to be inside your house.

They had a firebreak and it reduced the infection rate but that lasted weeks and now the rate has increased at a worrying rate.

I keep myself to myself, I don't chat or visit anybody and after I pick up Porn at Heathrow on Sunday it will be just us for Christmas, I am not meeting up with any relatives.

I would love to meet up with a couple at New Year but that could depend on the rules which I think will be tightened after Christmas.

Personally I think people can't be trusted to do the right thing although there are some sensible options and precautions to take if needing to be nearby others.  I also think shutting pubs down has caused one of the reasons for the infection increase as people will (and no doubt have) just moved into their homes to socialise without any covid precautions in place.

Hasn't done the economy or business any good either.

Wales to go into lockdown after Christmas

Wales will go into full lockdown from December 28, First Minister Mark Drakeford has announced.

The Welsh Labour leader said a “sustained rise in coronavirus” meant that the country would have to move into its highest level of restrictions.

Mr Drakeford also said the planned five days of relaxed measures would remain in place following talks between the four UK nations.

Getting ready for the Christmas high season...

California orders 5,000 body bags as COVID deaths surge

SACRAMENTO — The number of Californians dying of COVID-19 has increased so rapidly that the state ordered 5,000 additional body bags to help hospitals cope with the surge, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Tuesday.

Newsom said the need to prepare for the possibility of thousands of additional deaths shows the severity of the worst surge of the pandemic. California has averaged 163 deaths a day over the past week, compared with 41 deaths a day a month ago.

“That should be sobering,” Newsom said during a news conference in Sacramento County. “This is not the flu. This is not something to be trifled with. This is a deadly disease.” ...
