  1. Seeing as you asked . . . . . My (Thai ) wife and I have a small Company ( Engineering & Property Services Co Ltd ) based here in the Darkside. I'm an Engineer to trade, so have a reasonable understanding of how things "work". We have Thai staff ( as required to meet my Work Permit quota ), we have a Furniture Workshop / equipment store and we have trusted sub-contractors that cover all the trades that I can imagine you ever needing; which include :- Air Cons Glazing Ceramic Tiling Electrical Plumbing + water tanks, pumps et al I.T. Decorating - painting, papering etc. Curtains, blinds etc Granite & Marble ( and refinishing work ) Security safes Security doors Mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum fabrication Bespoke furniture General Building work Etc. etc All sub-contractors work under our ( my ) supervision. Where possible, we aim to provide a near European standard of work. We have been called out to replace a Bum Gun head. I've been employed as the Project Manager of a THB 35m+ house ( mansion ) build. These two jobs represent the two extremes thus far. Currently, we're upgrading the 2nd of 3 bathrooms in a ( Pattaya ) town house, due to start building some internal walls and replacement of old steel water pipes ( with PVC / PP-R ) in a 200 Sq.M Jomtien Condo renovation next week. Also in discussion regarding the revamping of a 3 storey shop-house bar in central Pattaya. We work on a straight forward "Cost + 20%". Labour day rates for various staff skill sets are declared up-front, as is my wife's and my day-rate. Quality materials are purchased at the best rate we can find. The work is done, the cost of materials and labour added-up, a 20% premium is applied ( Overheads, Profit Margin etc. ) and the total is what we ask you to pay. If the job goes well, you pay less. If we hit an unforeseen snag ( TiT ! ), we tell you, we fix it ( properly ) and you only pay what it costs ( + 20% ). The alternative is that you invite a contractor to Quote for the work; he Quotes for what he can see, + a huge contingency for what he can't see, but experience has led him to anticipate, + a profit margin. If the job goes well, you pay through the nose and he makes a killing. If the job goes badly, he has the option of covering-up any problems and walking away with a small profit, or doing it properly and making a loss . . . . unfortunately, the latter doesn't often happen. You will find cheaper than us, but I would like to think that, although more expensive, at the end of the day, we provide Value for Money. So, if you think we might be able to help, please give me a shout. Steve ( a.k.a. Proffesor ) 08221 68865 [email protected]

  2. I was surprised also ... there have only been 5 or 6 gals that have tried to steal from me ... but, those 5 - 6 put a stain on the rest of the gals .. all BKK gals too ... I can't really tell you how many BKK gals I have been with .. but, pretty many (no way am I bragging ) .. To their credit though ... I will say most are honest .. you send them to 7/11 for some cigs and beer they will come back .. give you back every satang they didn't spend ... pretty often they will bring food that you never asked for and never asks for baht back .. yea - I would say most are pretty good gals regardless why they freelance ... But .............. you gotta protect yourself .. so best to keep your "third" eye open We all get relaxed with the gals most of the time .. but, you can never let down your guard ... sad ... but true .... because there is nothing more I hate than a liar or a thief

  11. Every month I park opposite the Marquee whilst Sai keeps her appointment in the dentist. I am sure the same 2 or 3 guys are always the only customers but it is invariably 3:00pm which is hardly peak supping time. My mind invariably drifts to the days long ago when I was still at School and blowing my two paper rounds earnings when being taken to the Marquee in London's Wardour Street. If my memory serves me right, the Yardbirds, with Clapton, frequently played on a Thursday and the Who on a Friday. I have diminished hearing and I seriously blame Keith Moon's drumming in that very small venue. Where did all those years go?

  13. Same as Mabprachan, Huai Chak Nok is also slowly recovering, but still extremely low. Extra pump is no longer needed to get the water to the pumping station. I think this will make for a nice park once done, and with more water in the reservoir.

Might recognize him as Phil Collins bass player. Guy is an absolute legend and tells a story ,then plays through the song. Does t practise it before hand, makes the odd mistake. This bloke was there, making some of the most important music this world has ever seen. Take a look at his channel, you won’t be disappointed.

Emirates have just reinstated their second LHR service with an A380, they expect their service to be back up to 50% of pre pandemic levels operationally by August. not entirely sure where the passengers are going to come from, but it certainly does inspire a bit of confidence. There's a few good articles on this site, also the source for the above: https://www.breakingtravelnews.com/news/category/airline/

  28. Emirates are currently running at least 3 daily flights to Heathrow, the change was that the EK3 evening arrival changed from a Boeing 777 to an Airbus 380 on August 1st. EK1 at lunchtime is also an A380 while EK7 is still a B777 for now. Good to see the A380s back in use and hope they can fill them.

  29. My last ever train ride was Kings Cross to Edinburgh so that Sai could see the English/Scottish countryside. It just happened to coincide with the lambing season which was a big bonus if you have never seen a lamb before. One of my better decisions not to fly from Heathrow to Edinburgh. By booking in advance through trainline.com the cost of two first class tickets was much less than two standard price tickets.

  35. Posted at 14:0114:01 Thailand delays travel bubble plans EPACopyright: EPA Hotels in Thailand reopened last month, but foreign tourists have yet to returnImage caption: Hotels in Thailand reopened last month, but foreign tourists have yet to return As a nation dependent on tourism, Thailand had hoped to form travel bubbles with a select number of territories to help revitalise its struggling economy. But now the government has been forced to shelve the plan amid a rising number of cases in parts of Asia, Reuters news agency reports. The move, which was announced in June, would have allowed travellers from countries with low infection rates to enter Thailand without being forced to quarantine. "Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea were among those considered because those areas had a low number of cases, but now they were in double-digits sodiscussions were put on hold," Thailand's coronavirus taskforce spokesman told Reuters. Thailand itself has recorded just 3,300 cases of coronavirus and has gone 10 weeks without cases of local infection.

  36. I always take the GFs sister for a ride from BKK to Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phetchaburi or Chumphon. I sleep most of the way and it's a relaxing ride. Not a big fan of buses. Wouldn't I know these three provinces well as I traveled extensively throughout them a couple of months on 2 different occasions. I always stayed in Hua Hin as my base and traveled around from there. There are so many places to visit and hang out other than Hua Hin and Cha Am. My personal favorite is Khao Luang cave temple which is 100 feet plus underground with and opening for light over top in the ground. They filmed a part of Bangkok Dangerous with Nick Cage in the temple. Some good eateries in the area for a great meal. Khao Luang *Not my photo, but I do have many of my own-just not on this comp*

  37. Had a nice ride today to capture a photo update of the area reservoirs. First up Mabprachan, which as you can see in the photos is slowly recovering, but still very low. Saw this guy making good use of an umbrella to catch the wind and propel him and his boat along. Water is once again around the base of the overflow structure. Looks like fishing restrictions. Can someone with Thai language skills translate? If you know where to look, you can just barely make out the top of the head of a Thai walking through the weeds. Hint: just left of center in the pic Here he is in a small clearing. Gives you a good idea of just how high the weeds have grown.

  38. I drive through Hua Hin .. all the time ... I have a place in BKK on Ramkhamhaeng pretty close to the motorway ... I don't have to deal with the "your nightmare " traffic getting to Sukhumvit soi 50 .. pretty easy for me to get on the expressway ... I don't care what anyone says .. and I have been doing this for years .. on Rama II .. about an hour and a half to the Ratchaburi .. Petchaburi split is f***d ... the toll booth is f***d ... a shit load of semi trucks .. sometimes you get lucky ... and the construction that has been going on over the last year makes it even more of a "night mare" The fastest I have ever made it to Hua Hin from BKK is about 3.5 hours ... and I am a demon driving down the express way in the Beast II ... I either stop in Pak Tho on the way to see a great friend .. or stop in Hua Hin or Cha AM .. depends on my mood .. sleep over night and then get back on the road to go back home to Beach Gal close to Pak Bara So this bullshit I read about a couple of times on this forum going from Patts to Hua Hin in 2 hours is pure fiction ... And taking the bus from Mo Chit is even more of a night mare ... just getting to Mo Chit can be huge problems if driving .. pretty easy though if you get on the BTS depending where you are coming from ... the sitting around and waiting on the bus , etc. takes to much time for me The train is not bad .. I always used to take the train all the time to see Jacques in Ban Krut from BKK at Bang Sue .. still more time than 3.5 hours .. depending on the train ( all of the milk stops .. LOL ) So, I read on this forum about getting around .. I just shake my head because it is a total crap shoot .. getting from A to B .. even in BKK which is notorious

  44. All this talk about baked beans, guess what I had to have for lunch, lol? I just posted this as a reply to the Gallic Faction on the Bastille Day thread, but it's so interesting that it would be a shame not to include it here as well. So here we go, 29 fascinating things you never knew about baked beans: https://www.yours.co.uk/life/home/29-things-you-never-knew-about-baked-beans/ 1. Baked Beans were originally sold in the UK by Fortnum and Mason in 1901 as a luxury item. A large can would cost 9d (the equivalent to £2.15 by today’s prices). 2. The first can of British-manufactured Heinz Beanz was created in the Heinz factory in Harlesden in 1928. 3. The bean centre at the Heinz Kitt Green factory in Wigan (opened in 1959) uses 1,000 tonnes of dry beans per week. 4. Royalty have long been fans of Heinz Beanz, with The Queen accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh visiting the factory in 2009, following the Queen Mother’s visit in 1959. Heinz has now held a Royal Warrant for 63 years. 5. Heinz Beanz are one of the most popular foods in the UK. Every day over one a half million cans of Heinz Baked Beans are consumed in the UK. That’s more than 540 million cans a year. 6. There are approximately 465 beans per standard 415g can of Heinz Beanz. 7. The small white beans used to make Heinz Beanz are a type of haricot bean called ‘Navy’ beans. The other main ingredient is tomato puree, made with Mediterranean grown tomatoes. 8. Every individual bean is checked for colour and size before they are allowed into a can of Heinz Beanz. 9. They were originally called BAKED beans because the can is first filled with blanched beans, then the sauce, then the can is sealed with a lid, and THEN the cooking begins. The beans are cooked inside the sealed can. Yes that’s right – INSIDE THE CAN – and not before they go into the can. 10. The tomato sauce is blended with a secret mix of spices to create the distinctive Heinz flavour. 11. The special Heinz Beanz spice mix comes to the factory in numbered - as opposed to labelled – bags to keep the recipe a secret. Only three people in the world know the exact ingredients. 12. 50,000 tonnes of navy beans are shipped annually from North America to Liverpool docks and delivered every day to the Heinz factory in Wigan in two-tonne bags. 13. The factory holds 36 hours’ worth of beans at any one time, and 60 days’ worth of stock is held at Liverpool docks, just in case bad weather stops beans from travelling over the Atlantic in ships. 14. Scott took crates of Heinz Beanz on the infamous British Antarctic Expedition which started in 1910. A photograph from the expedition shows Frederick John Hooper tucking into a can whilst seated on a Heinz crate in 1911. 15. The original recipe for Heinz Beanz was based on Boston beans, so they used to contain pork. But because of shortages in the second World War, the pork was taken out and they were sold as vegetarian beans. They’ve remained the same ever since. 16. In the 1940s, the Ministry of Food classified Heinz Beanz as an “essential food” during wartime rationing. 17. The slogan ‘Beanz Meanz Heinz’ – created in 1967 - was unanimously voted best advertising slogan of all time by an expert panel from the UK’s advertising industry. The slogan now has a place in history, taking top slot in the Ad Slogan Hall of Fame. 18. Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik, Ellie Goulding and Joss Stone are all known to be fanz of Heinz Beanz. 19. 19. Heinz Beanz are exported to more than 60 countries, including Russia and China. 20. On The Who’s ‘Sell Out’ album cover, Roger Daltry appears immersed in Heinz Beanz and caressing a giant Heinz Beanz can. 21. Heinz Beanz are free from artificial colour and preservatives and a valuable source of protein and fibre, as well as being low in fat and sugars. 22. A serving of baked beans on toast, accompanied by a glass of milk, offers over a third of the recommended daily amounts of Iron, Vitamins B1 and B2 as well as three quarters the amount of calcium we need. 23. Heinz UK salesman used to carry a hot flask full of Heinz Beanz to provide samples for their customers. 24. Heinz Snap Pot was launched back in 2007, providing personalised portions that are simply snapped and heated in the microwave for one minute before being served. 25. In 2009, Heinz developed a prototype of what was believed to be the world’s smallest portable microwave, perfectly sized to fit a Heinz Snap Pot. The Beanzawave gave workers across the country a much needed helping hand to make some of their favourite hot snacks either on the go or at their desk by just plugging the microwave into the USB port on their computers. 26. Heinz uses enough tomatoes every day to fill an Olympic-size swimming pool. 27. If all the tomatoes used by Heinz in a year were loaded into 15 tonne trucks parked nose to tail, they would stretch from London to Southampton. 28. Heinz released the Fridge Pack in 2010 – the first ever resealable beans product that enables bean-fans across the country to use as much or as little as they like before they close and pop back in the fridge. 29. The well-known turquoise used as the predominant colour on the label of Heinz Beanz is registered to the brand through a UK Trade Mark registration.
