And therein lies the problem. You might kick the fxxk out of as you so eloquently put it, but what happens if in the meantime you contract it and then when you are back home visiting your folks you pass it on to Ma & Pa. That's the scenario that worries me most and is the reason I chose not to visit Thailand at this time. I'm healthy so would reasonably expect to make a quick recovery from it, but passing it on to my folks who are older and not in such good health would be a nightmare.

I'm currently in Thailand, and have been for 4 months. I go home at end of March... hopefully! I would hope I will be ok should I catch it.

For various reasons I wont bore you with, my plan was initially to go and stay with my 85 year old mother, until a house that has been trashed by tenants has been refurbed. I was going to do some of this refurb myself, along with a maintenance chap I use, who is 68, smokes like a chimney, coughs for Britain, and had a heart attack 4 years ago, but can do house maintenance better and faster than me, albeit for s price....

I'm still going home, assuming the world hasn't shut, but am self quarantining myself from mother, the maintenance chap and other elderly friends, and calling in lots of favours to do so.

Seems the responsible thing to do to me.

Australias insurers and re insurers have made their statement on Corona

"Coronavirus COVID-19 is being called a pandemic by insurers, making travel insurance policies void"

Am expecting that to become worldwide as its clearly got the potential to completely wipe out insurers......still say the chance of any of us catching it is very tiny but that insurance would now not cover subsequent disruption from Corona and thats a major issue unless pockets are deep

Well I must be OK anyway! I went to Makro this morning to pick up some bulk drinkables and the two cuties at the entrance measuring your temperature nodded me through so I'm evidently not virus-ridden yet. A cunning ploy by Makro, crusty old farts like me might get a bit stroppy about this mullarky, but how can you object to two pretty young things pointing a digital thermometer at your forehead? Actually, given that it's in Pattaya I'm a bit surprised they haven't got a pretty young boy there as well to keep the Dongtan crowd happy, lol.

I was shoe shopping in River Island yesterday and the sales girl could of taken my temperature anytime, she was about 18 and hot as f**k with a low cut top.

Then I realised I was old enough to be her grandad. 😀

What exactly does that mean?

All travel policies are void? (That would be a nice little earner for the insurance companies unless they are going to give refunds.) You are not covered by Coronavirus if you catch it? You are not covered for anything that comes about as a result of Coronavirus? Something else?

Would mean policies still valid but anything connected to a claim involving Covid would be declined

Coronavirus currently has a death rate of between 1 and 2.5%. So that would make it at very least 10 times as deadly.

Then why has South Korea a death rate of 0.7%  from 6767 confirmed cases as at last Friday?

The answer is that South Korea has a sweeping testing program and thus has identified far more positive infections and is therefore more likely to have an accurate death to infection ratio.

It is thought that the true number of people infected with coronavirus is much higher than the official count due to the likelehood that many "patients" with mild symptoms never saw a doctor and never had an official lab test. They are not factored into the case/fatality rate. There is also apparently a limited supply of test kits available world wide and where that shortage has ocurred some countries have been limiting the tests to those thought most vulnerable. i.e those of advanced age.

My source for the above is Jeremy Faust instructor at Harvard Medical School.

He is of course just making an educated guess unlike you, me, grayray and most others expressing an opinion who make an uneducated guess. One of us may be right simply on the basis of large numbers.  If Stevie Wonder thows enough darts he is going to get a bulls eye sometime always supposing he doesn't catch coronavirus first. He must be a coffin dodger by now unless he is already brown bread? 🤣

Yea, and then why the US who haven't tested so many currently have a death rate of about 5%, China 4%.

There's so many unknowns about this virus, and that's part of the problem, and why Governments are acting like they are, to not to would be negligence.

But whatever the death rate, it's much more than the 'common flu', which is what I was trying to point out.

at a guess given the  fact that mild cases hrdly ever present to be tested that the mortality rate is less than 1% maybe as low as 0.5%

Its still very signfiicant

whats scares me is people goign into shopping malls  and churches and opening fire with auto weapons.  its a comparatively new fad and whilst similar to regular murders, is different.    thats how i see this virus.  its similar to the flu, but not the same.  it started in a small way but looks like it will spread much faster and is more contagious than regular flu.  no one knows if it can go dormant and come back again.  if thats the case then NEXT WINTER could be a calamity, as by then carriers or whatever would be everywhere.    the chinese lie about figures and were slow in releasing info, slower too in sharing data and samples to the world BUT they did the right thing by ring fencing 13 mill chinese in the area affected.  but then again whilst that might work in the army state of china, i cant see it working in, say, the uk or US.

we are on the second, ( maybe 3rd) version of COVID already as it mutates.  no one has a clue as to how many more versions will become evident this year alone.

Young people, healthy people, they will get a cold, be carriers and share it, then move on without much hassle.  for us older folk, and those with weak chests or other complaints, its bloody scary.

but then again we can either rush out and fill our garages with toilet paper "in case"  or simply get on with life, as we have no control over it.  taking extra care and enjoying our time here.

bloody glad I am in the LOS.  onyl cases here are brought in by outsiders,   and numbers still lower in total than the number of new cases in one day in the UK alone.  ( to put it into perspective)

I think you will find that applies to most, if not, all countries other than China.

I kind of think there are a lot more cases in Thailand than is being presented as most poor Thais in contact with any outsiders don't have the means to get tested, protected. My wife was telling me about costs of villagers needing to get a test and it was way beyond her family means so unless there is a free service offering tests for those with symptoms of the virus it could escalate down the line.

Something I am unhappy about is that people also returning to UK etc are lying about their travel when asked by authorities, I have a friend who already has been for routine tests (unrelated to Covid) and was asked whether he had recently been in infected countries (including Thailand) and he said no!  I have told him that is just plain irresponsible and puts lives at risk but that is not of importance to him unlike his desire to be back in Thailand in a few weeks.i

An objective discussion and a message for those who say " I'm just going to get on with my normal life".

Oh, and another message for those who think they'll be rolling up their sleeve and getting their Covid-19 jab this year.

in all the media, tv and news

Got to be honest I have been looking at Bangkok Post, Thai Visa and Googled info but can not see anything specific about free testing for all citizens. I do see a lot of info about costs involved in testing at a select number of hospitals in Bangkok though.

Villagers tend to learn things by word of mouth from the headsman, I will talk with Porn tonight to see if her parents have any up to date news about free testing

Here in Rayong the stores are out of hand soap, hand sanitizer, and rubbing alcohol.  Still plenty of drinking alcohol to put your mind off it, though.

Here in the Rocky Mountains we are not to worried at this point... BUT we are also very aware of what could be coming. Not everyone here is a survivalist but only a fool wouldnt have a pantry stocked for a month or two just in case the shit hits the fan.
