U.S. Coronavirus Cases Surpass 20,000; FDA Authorizes First Rapid ‘Point-of-Care’ Test

Restrictions are ramping up amid the growing coronavirus pandemic, with several states moving closer to an effective lockdown.
By Derek Hawkins

  • Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus exceeded 20,000 in the United States on Saturday, according to a Washington Post count, as states ramp up restrictions on their citizens’ movements.
  • The Food and Drug Administration approved the first coronavirus test that can be conducted entirely at the point of care for a patient — and deliver results in 45 minutes.
  • USA Track & Field pushed for postponing the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, adding to calls to delay the Tokyo Games.
  • In Spain, authorities reported the country’s biggest single-day death toll, while more countries curb international travel.
  • The British government pleaded with Britons to stop panic buying at supermarkets while Australian authorities ordered people off Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach Saturday.
  • Illinois joined California and New York in ordering residents to stay at home, and Oregon officials indicated Friday that similar restrictions are on the horizon.
  • President Trump’s top economic adviser said a coronavirus rescue package could ultimately inject more than $2 trillion into the economy, making it the single most expensive fiscal stimulus in American history.
  • The Air Force flew 89 Americans who were stranded in Honduras back to the United States.

Shocker!!!!!!!!!! 🙄

France chides 'irresponsible' citizens

Olivier Véran, 21 March

France's health minister echoed recent remarks by the head of the World Health Organization and New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo about people who flout directives on social distancing.

"In these circumstances," Olivier Véran told a news conference, "a casual attitude is unfortunately not just irresponsible. It is dangerous - for oneself and for other people."

That's a hard watch. Another 800 dead in one day in Italy.

I can also see a full proper lock down coming to the UK, maybe even start of next week.

The amount of groups of people out in parks, markets etc in London today was ridiculous. Not giving a f**k about keeping their distance or anything.

Over 80 million Americans under virtual lockdown as restrictions tighten

Updated March 21, 2020, 5:17 PM EDT

The number of Americans under virtual lockdown grew Saturday to over 80 million, with New Jersey joining the list of states issuing a stay-at-home order or other sweeping mandates to fight the spread of the new coronavirus.

“We must flatten the curve and ensure residents are practicing social distancing," New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said, adding, “Even with this order in effect … life in New Jersey does not have to come to a complete standstill.”

New Jersey's stay-at-home order applies to nearly all of its 9 million residents. It comes after Illinois issued a similar mandate Friday for its 13 million residents and following California's stay-at-home order for its population of 40 million.

In New York, with a population of over 19 million, the governor has ordered that all nonessential businesses keep their workers home. Pennsylvania's governor has also ordered that all businesses that are not "life-sustaining" close.

New York also announced Saturday that the number of coronavirus cases there now tops 10,000.

Worldwide, there are now more than 275,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Most cases in New York City are of people under 50

Most people who have tested positive for coronavirus in New York City are younger than 50, according to figures released by the city Saturday.

This does not reflect the ages of those who have died, only people confirmed to be infected with the virus.

U.S. intelligence reports from January and February warned about a likely pandemic

By Shane Harris,
 March 20, 2020 at 8:10 p.m. EDT

U.S. intelligence agencies were issuing ominous, classified warnings in January and February about the global danger posed by the coronavirus while President Trump and lawmakers played down the threat and failed to take action that might have slowed the spread of the pathogen, according to U.S. officials familiar with spy agency reporting.

The intelligence reports didn’t predict when the virus might land on U.S. shores or recommend particular steps that public health officials should take, issues outside the purview of the intelligence agencies. But they did track the spread of the virus in China, and later in other countries, and warned that Chinese officials appeared to be minimizing the severity of the outbreak.

The Governor  of Pennsylvania has issued a 5-page detailed list of "life-sustaining businesses" which are allowed to remain open despite the lockdown order.

I'm sure many will be happy that booze manufacturers, distributors and retailers are on the list. You can see the full list here. An excerpt:

Don't worry chaps

Up here in Lancashire we've had a message from 103 year old Vera Lynn and an old rendition of "we'll meet again". Bloody brilliant and a much better listen than some radio shows getting together and playing "you'll never walk alone" simultaneously and better than some hipster playing guitar on Instagram.

Let's get the ration books printed now and learn to queue properly at the butchers for a pigs trotter or a newspapers worth of tripe. Luxury.

Get your newspaper bog rolls sorted in your luxury indoor loos and make sure your windows are blackened of a night time. Don't forget though, the knocker upper will be tapping on your upstairs window at 6am with his long stick reminding you to get up for work int Cotton Mill or downt pit or at local iron works.

It's alreet though frt kids, up ont Lancashire moors lookin at all breet leets Ower Manchester and Liverpool. Spotleets are gradley.

Oh my mi dad's OK over there in Dunquirk.... Hope he's alreet. Not seen Im in over 4 years and mi ma's gotten herself pregnant. Nice surprise for mi dad if he meks it home.

No idea why I wrote that lot chaps... Means bugger all to most of you but means a lot to me lol!

Only 4.5% of the people worldwide have died from this virus. However, 95.5% have recovered. Italy has one of the oldest populations in the world. High rate of smoking as well. These percentages are overall and not broken down by age. Even so, this virus is not a death sentence fellas. However, if these fucktards continue to ignore the precautions put into place, it is not helping matters.

The Virus is way down the list of what will be causing deaths.....People losing their jobs, income, no money to pay rent buy food etc will be the real killer if this drags out long enough...

I've been wondering if a better approach might have been for the 20% at greatest risk of death from the virus due to pre-existing medical conditions should have been the ones to self isolate while the 80% majority continued on with their lives. Yes, a good portion of the 80% would become infected at some point, but by most accounts the symptoms are mild and easily dealt with bed rest, drink plenty of fluids, and acetaminophen to control the fever.

It sucks if you're in the 20% high risk category, but is it worth the social and economic disruption having everyone self isolate to protect the 20%.

FTC & FDA: Warnings sent to sellers of scam Coronavirus treatments

March 9, 2020
by Colleen Tressler

The FTC and FDA have jointly issued warning letters to seven sellers of unapproved and misbranded products, claiming they can treat or prevent the Coronavirus. The companies’ products include teas, essential oils, and colloidal silver. The FTC says the companies have no evidence to back up their claims — as required by law. The FDA says there are no approved vaccines, drugs or investigational products currently available to treat or prevent the virus.

The seven companies are:

  • Vital Silver
  • Aromatherapy Ltd.
  • N-ergetics
  • GuruNanda, LLC
  • Vivify Holistic Clinic
  • Herbal Amy LLC
  • The Jim Bakker Show
