I would, as an engineer, not have said so until fairly recently, but we have increasingly been moving from STEM to STEAM, adding the Arts to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths in our thinking and this is a great example of minds being open enough to embrace this approach.

As a non-engineer all I can say to the above is...............................................................what? 🤣

Infection numbers & deaths are starting to go down in the US... :default_animier:

CDC says wear a mask....better than that...wear two!

"...Wearing a mask — any mask — reduces the risk of infection with the coronavirus, but wearing a more tightly fitted surgical mask, or layering a cloth mask atop a surgical mask, can vastly increase protections to the wearer and others, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Wednesday.

New research by the agency shows that transmission of the virus can be reduced by up to 96.5 percent if both an infected individual and an uninfected individual wear tightly fitted surgical masks or a cloth-and-surgical-mask combination.

Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, director of the C.D.C., announced the findings during Wednesday’s White House coronavirus briefing, and coupled them with a plea for Americans to wear “a well-fitting mask” that has two or more layers..."

I posted that the current lockdown in WA is an overkill as it is based on one case. If you think that it is not an overkill...no problem.... lets agree to disagree with the decision they have made.

On 31st January with 5 hours notice Perth and surrounding areas were placed on full lockdown for 14 days after a quarantine hotel worker was found to be infected with the UK virus, sorry, UK variant. Some conditions were eased when there were no immediate new infections.

All, bar one, immediate contacts were traced and tested negative. The other contact had departed overseas and is irrelevant. Persons who had been in the same area at the same time as the infected worker were also invited to get tested.

As no further cases have been detected, at 00:01 on Sunday 14th all restrictions will be lifted and Western Australians will return to the Covid free carefree lifestyle they had been enjoying for the previous 10 months.

Three days after the Perth infection was discovered there was a similar leakage from a quarantine hotel in Melbourne. The Victorians, instead of going immediately into a full lockdown opted for a "managed" approach. Identifying contacts and placing them into isolation.

After 10 days of continuing infections Victoria has given up on the "managed" approach and will now go into a 5 day full lockdown. What happens after that remains to be seen.

Would the Western Australian approach have been as successful had there been further infections? Who knows but clearly, the "managed" approach with the idea of avoiding lockdowns doesn't work as hoped for.

As a side note. In both cases the hotel worker does not appear to have breached protocols or had direct contact with an infected person staying at the hotel. The assumption is that both were infected by the circulating air within the hotels. Apparently the virus hasn't been told about the 6'/1.5M rule.

For those who don't know. All (well most) overseas arrivals to Australia are required to isolate in a quarantine hotel for 14 days before being let loose in the community.

I think it's been well proven that there is no such thing as overkill regarding Covid.

That must be something of great concern in relation to hotels, cruise ships, etc.

I think you should run back to your google again

As said...WA had 1 case.... but they locked down and closed many businesses...halted people lives... for one case.

Victoria has now done the same. A hotel was found with cases... but they close the whole State... but hang on... if you play tennis no problem...you are now an essential worker.

For all that do not know.... there are thousands of Aussies stranded overseas for months now who are trying to return to Australia... but Australia is letting tennis players...actors... a British judge for a TV show The Voice... and some of them even brought the virus with them.

At the moment the only passport being disrespected in Australia seems to be an Australian one.

Again @fygjam I ask the question... are you a born and bred Sandgroper????

cheers

I believe they have to join a queue to get into a quarantine hotel.

There are limitations, getting a flight and getting into a quarantine hotel (which involve police & health supervision 24x7 etc - so costly).

There are caps on the numbers the various Australian States will accept and it can be hard to get a seat on a flight and quarantine. Many report having been bumped from confirmed flight bookings repeatedly as others offer the pay for business or first class seats.

So Yes, some Australians are saying they are having huge difficulty getting home. A whole range of circumstances involved according to reports etc.

Then there are those with Australian passports holders who still live(d) in their countries of birth, scrambling to get to the relative safety of Australia. Like most countries Australia had various schemes over the years to attract wealthy 'investors' and one of the carrots at one stage, was ease of an Australian passport.

Tennis Australia made special arrangements and picked up the costs for the tennis players I understand.

Many Australians have for months been trying to return to their home country and being denied entry as the Govt has placed a restriction of how many can come into the country.  This limit is still in place.

These tennis players and their hanger ons have virtually jumped the queque ahead of Aussies...some who have been stranded for months.

cheers

Same old bullshit, some habits are hard to break.

The players and their entourages were never in "the queue".

Tennis Australia forked out $40 million for charter flights, additional hotels and associated staff to bring the players out. An option open to anyone.

If you're so worried about bringing people, probably disease ridden people, back to Australia put up $40 million and you can be a hero.

Well lets put it this way..... why is there a number restriction on Aussie citizens returning but tennis players can jump the entry queque??  The Govt has to give permission to let them into the country....so why are foreign tennis players and there hangers on more important than ordinary aussie citizens who have been stranded for months and refused entry.

Why were additional hotels not available months ago so the number to be allowed to return raised....after all...all returning aussies have to pay for their quarantine so the hotels are getting their money.

As for your last sentence..... hit google again....as some of the players.. oops essential workers.... who came here free ahead of the queque.... actually brought the virus with them.

cheers

We have an Aussie temp at work on another shift who is stuck here. Don't know where he's from in Oz though.

Agree with you about the tennis players, same with footballers swanning round Europe while everyone else is banned and now we are threatening sentences of 10 years if breaking travel quarantine rules.

One rule for the masses and one for the rich and famous.
