Deadliest day so far with 175 casualties.

A total lockdown is still an option if the number of people in ICU would reach critical limits.

forgive my ignorance, casualties as in sick or dead?  trust the former

The same media has been saying that the China numbers are not reliable, (can't trtust them commies...) but use them systematically in headlines like "US now more victims than China"

It's all fecking sensationalism, nothing to do with reporting, everything is about grabbing the attention and selling papers and ads for bog paper....

My TV is NEVER on (except for Netflix or Youtube movies). A look morning and evening at the main online news sites is enough.

Although the Guardian probably has a record, since weeks ALL their headlines are Cvirus related.

the chinese figures have always been lies matey.  add at least a zero to all of them, usually more.  people are counting the number of remains being collected now, doesnt add up, by faaaaar

Death count for 31/03/2020 according to

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/netherlands/

845 new cases for the same day.

In a national address to the Dutch nation on Monday, March 16 , Prime Minister Mark
Rutte said his country would aim to develop immunity to the novel coronavirus among
its population by allowing large numbers to contract the illness at a controlled pace.

In the past week, Rutte has since walked back the herd immunity policy line by
introducing what could be characterized as lockdown light.

The country’s pragmatic balancing act doesn’t appear to be working as well as intended.
The numbers released by the Dutch RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the
Environment) are not especially encouraging. As of Tuesday, March 31st the country has
a total of 12,595 confirmed cases, with 845 new cases in the past 24 hours; 1039 total
deaths, with 175 new deaths in the past 24 hours. There are at least 1,124 patients in
intensive care, with thousands more hospitalized. While there is a definite bending of
the curve in terms of numbers of new cases, hospitalizations have been rising at a steady
clip, with 722 patients hospitalized in the past 24 hours.

City says parking lot marked to distance residents from each
other was best option after virus forced another shelter to close

Images of homeless people sleeping in a converted parking lot in Las Vegas have sparked criticism, even as the city officials describe an “emergency situation” and say the solution was the best option after another shelter was forced to close amid the coronavirus crisis.

Over the weekend, authorities in Las Vegas needed to find additional sleeping space for the city’s sizable homeless population when a 500-bed overnight shelter closed after a client tested positive for the new coronavirus.

Officials turned a parking lot into a makeshift shelter, saying spaces for sleeping were drawn 6 ft apart in observance of federal social distancing guidelines.

Speaking of lies...

Still seeing, what I'm guessing are migrant workers, crammed together on transport trucks around here. An environment just ripe for infecting each other with the virus. The stats for infections in Thailand mentions the infectees nationality, yet strangely absent from those stats are any Burmese, Laos or Cambodia nationals. Hmmm....

Some good news on the ventilator front.

Texas 'mom and pop' business flooded with orders for helmet ventilators amid coronavirus crisis

One month ago, Chris Austin was running a little-known mom-and-pop business in Texas that fielded a few dozen orders a week for his helmet-style ventilation devices.

He had five employees and a handful of volunteers from the family's church who would pitch in at the workshop behind their home in the small town of Waxahachie.

Then the coronavirus epidemic hit.

Austin's company, Sea-Long Medical Systems Inc., is getting thousands of orders every day, from America's top hospitals to countries as far flung as the United Arab Emirates. Researchers say the device, which costs less than $200, could help hospitals free up ventilators for only the most critically ill coronavirus patients.
...
The original devices were made to run through ventilators. But working with Patel and her mentor, Dr. John Kress, Sea-Long has modified the helmets so they can be hooked up to a hospital's regular oxygen supply, keeping the ventilators free for those who need them most. They have also made another significant modification, adding a viral filter to prevent possible COVID-19 exposure to others.
...
Other companies make similar ventilator helmets, but Sea-Long's is the only helmet available in the U.S. that meets requirements of the Food and Drug Administration and has been validated in a clinical study for acute respiratory syndrome. No studies have yet been done, however, examining the effectiveness of the devices in treating COVID-19 patients.
...
The attention has led to some other acts of extraordinary generosity.

Austin said he recently got a surprised call from Virgin Galactic CEO George Whitesides offering to help him produce more devices.

"Chris, I saw what you do, and we want to help," Whitesides said, according to Austin. "Whatever it takes."

Austin told him he needed more machines to manufacture the devices but didn't have the cash to pay for them. Later that day, Austin got a call from his New Jersey-based supplier.

"Somebody just paid your bill," Austin said he was told. "They'll be shipping tomorrow."

With the four additional machines, Sea-Long expects to produce thousands of helmets a week. The goal is to produce 50,000 per week.
...
Amid the worsening pandemic, Sea-Long isn't planning to raise the price in part because it doesn't want to limit who has access to the devices.

"This probably sounds sappy," Austin said, "but we think of what if that was our son or daughter or grandfather sitting there in that bed gasping for air and we have to explain to him: 'I'm sorry. We don't have anything for you.'"

Sweden defies lockdown trend, bets on citizens acting responsibly

Sweden has bucked with the government leaving it up to individuals to act responsibly and decide whether to stay home or not. Restrictions that are in place are far more liberal compared with those of the nation's neighbors.

Public gatherings of more than 50 people are prohibited but there are no restrictions on private meetings, meaning parties and corporate events can still go ahead. Libraries and swimming pools remain open.

The authorities have instead advised the public to practice social distancing and to work from home, where possible, and urged those over the age of 70 to self-isolate as a precaution. In other words, the country has staked its bets on people acting responsibly.

An impressive new intensive care hospital the UK is getting built in record time.

UK races to convert a convention hall into hospital for coronavirus patients

The United Kingdom will open the doors this week on what could soon be the biggest intensive care unit in the country -- and it was built in about a week.

As the number of Covid-19 cases in the UK began to rise, the National Health Service (NHS) realized it might be short of many thousands of ICU beds.

It hopes the solution lies in a massive convention space in London's East End, the ExCel Center -- a venue more accustomed to showcasing the latest ventilator technology than actually using it.

The coronavirus field hospital will be called NHS Nightingale, after the pioneering nurse Florence Nightingale.

"Oh my goodness, there is no comparison," said Natalie Forrest, when asked about the hospital's scale.

Normally an executive at London's Royal Free Hospital, Forrest is the operational guru responsible for transforming the empty halls into a functioning hospital in less than a week.

When fully running, it will have 4,000 beds. Just a few dozen were ready at the time a CNN crew visited. Electricians were still running cables, plumbers installing sinks, and vast halls were still stacked with plastic-wrapped machinery.

The news in northern ireland has been dominated by imminent catastrophe and 14k Coronavirus deaths. However, statistics released today have shown that northern Ireland's death rate has FALLEN in recent weeks.

Coronavirus is a health concern only for the elderly and those with underlying illness, just like the flu or the common cold. The mass hysteria and public frenzy over this is doing more damage than the illness itself.

In a column for Critic Magazine, Young essentially says that the government shouldn’t be spending so much on saving people from coronavirus.

If you're free of underlying illnesses and under the age of 80 you're at more risk of suicide, cancer, dying in a car crash.

Convention Centers Transform Into Hospitals
In The Fight Against Covid-19

March 31, 2020

After closing their doors to trade shows and events due to the coronavirus pandemic, many convention centers across the U.S. are taking on an entirely different role. This week, many are being converted into makeshift medical facilities to help relieve beleaguered hospitals and staff so they can provide better care for more serious and critical patients. Take a look.

Javits Center

The Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City – currently the epicenter of the U.S. pandemic as of press time – is one of the first U.S. convention facilities to be converted into a temporary medical station. This effort is being led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Guard, FEMA, New York State Department of Health, Javits Center staff and others, according to Javits officials.
